Your right they certainly did swear a lot to "each other", while sitting in a trench or scrambling aft to the stern or forward to the forward torpedo room,but I can assure you, the whole time my old man was around (he served in Korea and spent time on subs) I never once heard him say the "F" word, now he was a Brit and could use other colourful types of slang (cockney) that would give you the same impression, but if you weren't from the UK, you wouldn't get the joke....

Point is, they (the older people)(am I old now 1956?) probably did swear just as much, but I betcha they only swore around friends and not in public...

The only difference is that "in olden days" we were more private about the way we used the words... We didn't scream them out in public like they are now... They aren't words that should be... Because you need to have some respect for the people around you... and that's the problem... as time goes on and the young ones get to the point where they think they are "clever" using the words they have no respect for anyone around them... and that's their problem - not the words they use, because we all use them, probably more than you do... but the fact you have no *****ing respect any more....

I know there's other military vets out there - so I will not speak for them, only for myself and my wife, having served for a bit of time. However, while employed by our Unca Sam, swearing, seemed to be a natural part of conversation - especially in the field.

We didn't even realize it til years later when watching a tape from a country we had traveled to during some not-so-common offtime; in which I was taping my wife in front of Buckingham Palace and a bus drove right behind my wife, blocking my view of the Palace, and I stated "G*ddammit, that f'ing bus drove right in my f'ing shot and ruined the whole f'ing thing. You f'ing bus!" To which, the love of my life responded "Oh *****, a f'ing bird sh*t on my f'ing new leather jacket. That f'ing son-of-a-b*tch. Let's go see some f'ing art now."

When we finished watching that tape, our mouths were held agape in horror - my wife shocked that we talked that way, and me that I just didn't rewind the tape and re-record that shot. We also realized and remember just how much we swore in those days, I mean, I must have used the f-bomb in almost every conversation in the field... maybe it was the MREs or too much "Cowboy Mac" hotdish for breakfast.

Too funny... It was about 5 years after I left the military when I finally got my hands on a copy of Don't Cry for me Sergeant Major. It's a book of the things the reporters were _not_ allowed to report during the Falklands War. It is an excellent book... If you can find it, read it... It displays the heart and soul of the British fighting man...

But having read it I realized that, though I no longer use the C word we used it _all_ the time... Phrases like "don't be a silly C", "what a C he is"... It was constant... much like you and your wife I was stunned how much we used profanity... but specifically that word... I still F and Blind like a trooper in the appropriate circumstances but I rarely even think the C word unless I am _really_ mad...

Like you, I now have some respect for those around me...

I admit I use the "F" word ...more often then I like too.....

But it appears to be a part of our culture now...

It is rare that I can watch a movie.....or tv (yes it may be bleeped...but we alll can figure out what was said......any way.... I'm rambling...must be the wine)

As for the "C" word....

Recently I was able to talk with my good friend......who lives far away.....we do remote wino sessions :D

She has a 13 year old daughter.......who recently called her the "C" would .."you Cword""

WELL............I would never ever..EVER...consider calling my friend that word...for fear of my life..

Trust me my dear... We weren't calling people "cows"... Well, we did that too but usually only referring to wives and obviously when we were not within earshot of said female or her friends... ;)

Interesting topic, really. I had to think for a little bit before I decided what I was going to say!

My husband and I both curse freely, when we're at home without our son. Probably more than neccesary, but we just do. However, very rarely do either of us curse in front of other people. He works construction, and I've had my ears blistered on more than one occasion by his co-workers, and I do tend to find it offensive when someone he works with that I don't know doesn't respect the fact that I am a woman enough to have the decency to say "Excuse Me". The ones who do know me know that it doesn't bother me, and that's fine. I think it's the simple matter of respect. At least be certain the person you're cursing in front of doesn't mind it. And for gods sake pay attention to your surroundings. I hate it when I'm out shopping somewhere with my son and someone starts cursing for no real reason. It's not that he doesn't know the words, and it's not that I expect to keep him sheltered from it, and it's not that he hasn't heard me say things that may not have been appropriate in times of extreme frustration...it's simply respect. You don't curse in front of children, elderly people, and women. It's not censorship...it's MANNERS.
