DSL on Windows 98

There is one thing that seems to be missed (or appears to me).. Win98 driver support would be next to none.. chances are the ADSL Modem's drivers ether dosent or not correctly offer Win98 support..

IF the modem has Ethernet capability..use it (mentioned earlier) if it is USB only modem.. Poor You.

I had a dick from Telstra (PigPond) tell me that USB offered faster data transfer than Ethernet.. My reply.. OFFER ME YOUR DATA FASTER THAN MY GIGALAN CAN HANDLE AND I WILL CONSIDER NOT CALLING YOU A DICKHEAD.. I was delivered a ethernet capable Modem

if your modem doesn't hava a PPPoE client as has been suggested, get yourself a router that does. once you've done that and if you cant afford to upgrande the RAM, get yourself DammeSmallLinux or puppy...i prefer puppy linux but the name turns some people off. both will fly on 190 some meg-o-ram. actually both will fly on 68 Meg and you wont be vulnerable to really stupid attacks as you are with win98. puppy is a bit faster than win98.

both these vesions of linux are as intuitive as windows 98 and both are based on brand new kernels. dont mess with old stuff. your just asking for trouble

Actually I believe you mentioned it before :) ... but I know it's spot on.. like I said.. I worked there hehe :)


nihil: it takes some work but like I've said... I ran Windows XP when it first came out on an 800Mhz machine with 64MB of RAM... it ran like that for a year before I added a 128MB chip next to it.... and then a year after that I finally did a full upgrade... I run my computers hard and it never failed me... Mind you I wasn't running virtual machines and that was with tweaking... but it definately functioned just fine... Not saying I would recommend or even suggest it... but it will work.

PS... this is officially the longest post ever to write... I started it at around 10PM... discovered we had some ants int he corner of the room...went to the store and bought RAID... killed them, watched some TV (can't go back in the computer room yet) and then remember I had the laptop... so now at 1:30AM i'm finishing it.

Obviously it is the modem manufacturer that would have to supply the drivers. The BT Voyager and Conexant Access Runner both support Win 98 (unfortunately the voyager does not support thunderstorms :D )

HT~ when you get a chance please take a look at that link I posted. It is a paper by some German/Austrian guys who conducted a series of progressive experiments as to what was the minimum hardware spec that XP would run on.

Would you believe 20Mb of RAM and an Intel Overdrive processor underclocked to 8 Mhz :eek: Of course it was an academic exercise, but interesting all the same.
