What is Domain?

Thanks for throwing away light on the topic.

You told about Windows - *nix network management. Thats good. However one question that still survives is that "what if all the computers on the network are running *nix (Assume LINUX)"? How do they manage their network then?

Yesterday, one of my friends, expecting an answer back, asked me if I know how to setup an Exchange server for SMTP, DNS and POP on Windows 2003 server OS. Of course my reply was negative but the question sounds interesting. I am not asking it as a "ask-and-do and earn the credit yourself question" but I want to know how to do it.

I know that many of the AO members have done this thing. So I expect at least a couple of replies back from your side.

This is something I got yesterday while posting a new thread. Its not working till now. Is everything working right (System admins might check this!):

I don't think you will get much help with such an obscure question as that. If you ran into specific problems and asked about thse, then it will be easier to help you out....

Nokia is right...although I believe MS based thier AD on Novell Server and the Groupwise network management.

I havent used Novell for 10 years or so...so I am unsure of it functionality now.

From what I can remember..MS Domains where much easier to set up...specially the printing ;)

I also havent used Novell in some time, but NDS (Novell Directory Services[now known as eDirectory]) was indeed around long before Microsoft decided to use the concept for AD.

I good overview of eDirectory is here

This links to a good overview of Directory Services as a concept with links to various offerings available.

Read up, and come back with any questions if you have trouble with some of the concepts.

AD is MSes version of NDS...I said groupwise...which is the exchange like app

I still remember setting up Novell on Windows 95 and thinking it was the greatest thing in the world. Times have changed.

The first Novell server I set up...I used floppies, on a 286.

One thing about a Novell server........rarely required a restart...those things just sat in the corner and hummed along for years
