Yes but that mostly stemmed from a period where your harddisk was able to do DMA and the CD drives only did PIO modes. That's not a good idea (performance wise) to mix on the same cable. These days CD drives can also do DMA and it shouldn't matter that much. That said, if you have 1 harddisk and 1 cd drive you might as well put each on it's own controller.
