I've had VoIP (G.711 codec) running over VPNs implemented on a site to site VPN using a 10Mbps synchronous line for months. No noticeable drop in conversation... but, the maximum usage on those lines have yet to breach 3Mbps for any substantial period of time and there is a decent QoS policy setup. I think you'll have less than desirable effects on an asynchronous line? Maybe with a nice QoS policy?
