DVD burning problem

4. not sure how fast those are supposed to be burning
5. samsung light scribe, its about 2 years old. (SH-S182M)

8. not running anything usually, but when i am running something the time to burn it doesn't seem to change
9. It never worked faster, I just always thought it should be able to burn faster than it is and never took the time to look into it until now, and some people say they've burned a full dvd in much less time

it also seems that the data on the disk is only being read at something around 2x. I ran nero CD-DVD speed tests and that is what the result seems to be. So I'm thinking something has to be set wrong.

There is your problem. The Read Speed must be faster than the Write Speed, otherwise it starts to write, then has to wait for the next read before continuing to write. This causes all sorts of problems with CD technology, especially on the fly burning.

If the readspeed is so slow, there would be 3 possible issues.

1) The media you are using is crappy, try another brand
2) The Drive is faulty, but does work on some level
3) The burning software has been specified to read at the 2x speed

Check the above issues and you will have your problem defined :)

I've used different software, and it seems it takes the same amount of time as the current software i'm using. Is this setting outside the specific software? like in the registry for example or something that I could check and change?

There would not be any speed control in the registry. The only other explanation is the drivers installed for the device. You can try and find some updated drivers - but failing that, and ensuring the correct drivers are installed - you are back to crappy media, or faulty drive.

Just a thought, have you got DMA mode enabled on the HDD and the burner?

This is what I have (see attachment). This is the properties of second Primary IDE down in device manager. I have it set to "DMA if available", and this screenshot is while burning a CD. For some reason it says "PIO mode" for device 0, and I don't know how to change that.

My DVD burner crapped out a few weeks ago and I have only just installed a replacement. I just checked it and found that I had the same problem.

I have now fixed it and would suggest that you try:

1. Installing the latest firmware for your burner.
2. Set everything to PIO mode then reboot, reset to DMA and reboot again.

Also disable system restore before you do this, that way the system doesn't re-load and is forced to load up with DMA enabled. :)

and just re-enable the system restore once it's loaded up fine. ;)

I know I'm bumping an old post, but I figured I'd I'd post, as I solved my problem. It has been really strange, but I thought I had tried everything. I hadn't reinstalled firmware, because I wasn't really convinced that could've been the problem. I went through everything else though, setting to PIO, restarting, then setting back to DMA mode and everything, and it still didn't work for me. So I pretty much gave up. But recently, I reinstalled Nero 7 because it was acting up, and after I restarted, it was burning dvds in about 6 or 7 minutes. It was then that I realized that Nero seems to take control over anything windows does with a dvd burner, as once Nero is installed, you can't use the windows explorer method of burning discs anymore. So now I'm lead to believe the control Nero has over the burner is related to the lack of effect when changing settings in windows. Nero must have kept the settings that were in affect when it was initially installed, and used those every time it burned. So when I reinstalled, it created new settings for itself that were from after I did all the DMA switching on the drives. Thats the only thing I can think of.
