Yes that isn't what I was referring to, that is proactive participation in conflict, as opposed to freedom of speech.

My objection is towards people who think that someone can use technology to gain freedom of speech.................... I am afraid that it just doesn't work like that.

I thought the description of the OS was that it didn't look suspicious,
with the "secret" data being interleaved unobtrusively in the midst of

Being a network security major in college... i was intending this thread to discuss methods and comments about the development of the OS.... i had no intent to invoke a flame war... we are computer people not politicians so the bleed heart liberal and world problems comments are really going to go anywhere here. We all have a vote and last time i checked i used it Nov. 4th.. lets leave it at that. I was unaware of the knoppix privacy mode it actually sounds pretty similar but more developed version of this however i cant really find information on it. I might dl it and run it in a VM see what it is all about

That version of Knoppix is old. Looks like v3.2 (v5.1 is current I believe).
It goes back to March 2004. ELE, which I used for a time, is dated now
too. The most recent docs on the site are from 2005 from the looks of
it. Download the .iso's and try 'em. CD's are cheap.

Might be fun to use tools like wireshark, nmap, hping and nc against them.

If you are going to seriously consider this project in the light of its alleged intentions then you have to take those considerations onboard.

The main problem that I can see is that the majority of people use some form of Windows OS, and the first problem I can see with this product is that it will stand out as being different?

Also, I do not hold out any hope for generating random "noise", "chaff" or whatever. That will stand out as being non-typical traffic and attract attention. Real people are creatures of habit and don't do "random";)


Whilst the concept may seem trivial, I strongly suspect that it would not be so easy to use "bot" style technology to generate something that looks like true internet traffic.

For example, I have quite a collection of malware generation toolkits which are instantly detected by AV products. The point is that they all have a "pattern" or "signature", and it is a real challenge to try to obfuscate this.

I have absolutely no criticism of your post or your motives. Sorry if you found my "The Surgeon General has determined" warning a little blunt........... that's just me being paranoid::hide-beh

I also thought about the stick out like a swore thumb problem but it you are using TOR like technology the information that you will be getting and sending will not be going though your computer to the net it will be onioned. Which means that the information will be coming and going from random nodes around the tor network most of which are windows users. So you will be hidden in the mess. I do see a problem with communication i know a lot of services require some sort access to your system.

The big problem has to be that in repressive regimes The Man owns the net, so will see what you are doing.

Given my "reputation" I think at least a few people will see just how silly this is if I of all people say something about it:

Unless you're living in some horrible, horrible place (Like Alabama or something), there are a few things to consider:

Whining about the US govt and how they control the net is sort of like whining about Microsoft going after people who pirate their software... The US govt was not only the funds, but the start it up for the internet as we know it.

The guys who were doing BSD made the whole TCP/IP thing, but the US govt not only funded them, they allowed them to use TCP/IP instead of the other one that was supposed to go in to it. (You can actually watch a very comical but true bit on this if you have the MKM speech / DVD "20 Years of UNIX" on DVD).

They spent a CRAP load of cash getting the internet going. I think some of us forget what really happened and forget that, even though the US govt has been bashed in the past, and sometimes with good reason, they did fund this thing we all use, and I really doubt they did it as a way to watch what your cooking recipe and surfing habits are.

They spent all this money making something that was a real advancement in how computers were perceived, and now anyone anywhere that has computers and phone lines, can use it to do whatever they want.

Do you REALLY think that the NSA cares you look at porn? This reminds me of the whole phone tapping thing, which I will say shouldn't even bother people who know how it actually works.

They don't actually listen to every call. That isn't even remotely plausible. Key words are used instead. If you say certain key words, your call is flagged and then listened to. If you were talking about a movie, OK, if you were planning to kill someone, well, they know and can prevent someone from being killed now. I'm against people being killed. I don't think it's right for any human being to kill another human being.

It may be fun entertainment in a movie, but that's it, a movie, real life death isn't funny.

And yes, I can in fact listen to Cannibal Corpse and Mortician while saying killing people is wrong.

Also, for the encryption fan girls who encrypt every document they make.... Seriously, if you want to waste your CPU cycles like that, give me your computer and I'll do something useful with it, like playing DooM or Quake.

The govt isn't going to spend billions and billions of dollars to have someone sit around listening to your phone calls to your friend to buy a dime bag and a beer, and then spend a crap load more cracking into your computer.

I don't think the US govt really cares a whole lot about cracking encryption....

Look, does this REALLY look like it's realistic? :

Person = P

USG: "Sir, we've cracked the code! Now we can read everything!"

P= "Well, that new Encryption is installed now, should be safe now!"

USG: "Buahahahahahahahah, now we have youe damn cookie recipe! Betty Crocker here we come !"......

No GOVT would survive spending countless dollars to break in and read your recipe book or what kind of porn you're looking at. I can't even imagine an NSA dude even caring that you look at pictures of puppies while you spank it.

I really doubt the NSA spends money finding every person who smokes a joint or even buys a beer for a minor, or looks up things on the net they find offensive. They have a lot more important crap to worry about than your chat logs with a 28 year old woman who is actually a 78 year old guy trying to get you to spank him with a wooden paddle with nails driven into the wood while he's tied up and hand cuffed to the bed with a sock in his mouth so you hear just slightly that muffled scream of pleasure....

OK maybe that last part belongs more so in a Lords of Acid song than a post but I was being creative.

I think that is what was in mind.............places like China, Syria and so on.

Because everything is closely monitored and state controlled it is a far different scenario from North America or the EU.

The other problem is that the bad guys know where to look and who to look at. Colleges, hospitals, religious institutions, media and so on. I guess if you are going to be an effective dissident it is hard to stay below the radar :(

Actually.. i dont think that the scenarios are 'far too different'. Maybe not as extreme but one of the major differences is that countries like China and Syria compared to the US or EU... that atleast they admit the monitoring and dont lie about it. Like ive been reading in the news lately for example that Germany and the U.K. want to add to monitoring in the near future.. but LOL.. its already happening since ages. Prolly just their way of letting us know slowly slowly.

Just cause the media keeps telling people that there is a 'new' law comming out soon about this or that sort of 'big brother' does by all means NOT mean that its not already fully implemented and in use since ages.

and no.. i cant prove it.. but... noone can prove me otherwise either :D
