Many of these free providers will take the credentials that you supply and pass them on to third parties. Some are relatively harmless such as marketing teams, but be careful, these third parties may not have secure systems and your details could end up anywhere.
I have heard that free WiFi is insecure. Starbucks, for example, has free WiFi, but is also a prime location for hackers. All the information traveling through that WiFi system can be compromised. I wouldn't access any personal accounts over free WiFi. Make sure that whenever you're accessing any personal accounts, that it is over a secure network.
