I would like to be come a white hat hacker, but I need help. I would like to join this wargame again. Please do not displayt stuff like use a search engine. I don't like all the porn and bad words you get with it. If someone could show me a good site or give some helpful hints in the world of hackerdom I would be glad. Please do no give suggestions like you can use this to break into your ISP. I want to learn the basics.

I've been with the Army National Guard...anyway, I signed up to do what I can-hope I get picked-I would be extremely honored if/when I do get picked....

I believe all they want to do is predict hacks on other sites...

when JP's on, does any one else notice that he seems to stay in the "site suggestions" and "Oops! a bug" forums, or is it just me? If so, maybe a message should go there...

This isn't a site suggestion or a bug. He spends his time in there, because that is where the problems show up. Any bugs, he tries to fix, and suggestions, he considers. If worth while, he trys to implement them. Those are the most important parts of his job. He does view the other threads when he gets a chance, and maybe he will get a chance to reply to this, maybe we will just have to wait and see what happens. Either way, eventually we will know. If you are that worried about knowing right away, go to the irc channel services.antionline.com (or irc.antionline.com if you have something like mIRC or xChat). He is always in there. If he is inactive, give him a little time. He always shows up eventually.

I personally don't mind the wait, it was merely a thought to those that might see a real immediate need for it.

unfortunately, I won't be able to get on IRC for another month or two.

Hey, Ennis, before I put my two cents in on this, how about booting it into the "AntiOnline Wargames" forum? Just a thought.

Well here are my two cents. I really think the paranoia is over rated. If this was just an attempt by the DoD to find out who the hackers of the world are, then why would JP freely advertise that? I for one can say that I will be happy to lend my skills. (whatever those are)

Yes, souleman is right, I read most threads that come up. I haven't commented about this one yet, because there is not a lot more that I can say at this point.

However, some of the concerns that people raise I think are funny.

For example:

1. This is a black helicopter project, and we're going to be tracking people for a massive DOD Database of haxorz. I hate to tell you all this, but none of you are that important that the DOD, or even I for that matter, would waste time "tracking" you.

2. That some how you'll get in trouble by participating in the wargame. Uhm, we asked some of you to participate, how would you get into trouble? Some people even seemed to imply that I am making up the wargame project to try and get people to hack DOD computers. Hello? BTW: The wargame network will be housed at AntiOnline Headquarters, not at some military base. Calm down people.

3. Some wonder why we're having this "first phase invitation only" and then an open wargame, etc. etc. I have to remind all of you, that this is a scientific study being carried out by a large team of people. We are not a bunch of kiddies setting up 486's on our dsl connections so we can feel uber by running a "wargame". Our goal is to help develop and compile information which can be used by the Department of Defense to protect US Infrastructures against attacks (aka information warfare). As for someone e-mailing some secretary from the SBIR program, and he/she not knowing about this project? There are hundreds of research projects funded by the DOD, I don't think it is weird that he/she didn't know about this one.

4. Why are we asking so much information about you? Personally, I don't think asking what general fields you have worked in, and what operating systems you know, is all that sensitive. Again, this is a scientific study, that has scientific controls. We need to be aware of all variables, and of course, the largest variables exist in those participating in the study.

5. Some people have come to the realization that hey, people from the DOD might already be visiting AntiOnline. Imagine That! AntiOnline is one of the most visited security sites on the internet. We have over 80,000 registered members. Over 1,000 of those registered with .mil e-mail addresses, and nearly as many with .gov Yes, many of the people that post here, and that have very high AntiPoint levels, are from military organizations, or their civilian counterparts. All sectors of our society need to be aware of security issues, and that certainly includes governments. These members are administrators just like many of you are, the only difference, is who their employers are. Hardly anything to get nervous about.

Those that we choose to participate in phase 1 will certainly be given more background information about the study. Eventually, when we open up the wargame network to the public, we will post even more background information on the site, and you will probably be able to interact with other people that are running this project. This is a very unique opportunity, that has been literally years in the making. AntiOnline's "Project Wargame" is the largest project of its kind to date. The wargame network which will be made publicly available will far exceed anything ever offered to the Internet Community.

On a personal note, I am very excited about this project, and about the research that will come from it. I hope that those that have been invited will be excited as well, and will sign up to help.

I also look forward to the day that this project is opened to everyone on the site, and am excited about the learning experiences that will be made available to our users.

Also, I don't know who in the hell started this "12 hours a week" stuff. The invitation says "12 hours over several weeks". There's a BIG difference.

1 hour a day * 2 weeks = 14 hours

There should be no problem meeting this requirement

JP: how are going to work with the wargame forum, only let those who are permitted access to it until it is public, open it up to the public when the chosen are known, etc., or something else?

Well, reading all of this, it makes just mad with myself to not had started digging into security a year ago!!!! :(

This looks like a real good thing to join, which I real was looking forward to, but I just have basic network knowledge, even more basic Unix commands, and relative knowledge of the windows OS.

Do you guys think that this skills (even limited when comes to security) could help if I join, or do has i thought on the first time, wait till I have consolidated my knowledge on security?! ( I don't wanna disapoint, or bother everyone, if i'm chosen.... )

I guess JP will also choose accordingly to the knowledge each one has, but i want to hear your opinion before i decide what to do......

I can understand where you're coming from JP. But there are some issues to consider:

By making the first phase invitation only a lot of people are relunctant to particapte because they have to release their personal information. This means that only people who agree to provide their personal information will be allowed to try and crack the wargames box, since you have to have permission to participate. Am I right assuming this?

Doing this limits the research to a sample of people that doesn't accurately reflect the user/abusers of computer networks in the real world. This means that any research that is conducted under these conditions is of limited credibility. I'm not saying that the results will be useless and that the project is a waste of time (far from it) but I'm still not clear on what the Department of Defense plans to gain from this research. Can you clarify this?

Another issue that seems to have been overlooked is that, on the web people are much more inclined to embelish the truth regarding their personal details. And what's to stop them? Someone who has had limited experiece with running a small network at home can claim that they are an experinced sysadmin. This system of sampling is not reliable enough to conduct credible scientific research since it relies good faith that the participants will answer questions truthfully.

I don't want to sound like a wet blanket. It might be too late for that I fear ;). But I'd still like to know more about how this whole thing is going to work?

Alright. I'd figure I'd jump on the bandwagon and say something here. I personally am glad this kind of research is going to happen. I've been waiting and looking a long time for something like this to happen. It's been much needed. I'm still learning, true, but I'm going to join and throw in whatever skills I have to contribute to this. I'm not worried about Gov't tracking, since it's really a moot point. What would they want with a 21 year old guy that's just trying to learn his way through computers? I don't think they'll hunt any specific people down. Even if they did, I'm sure JP has the foresight to have legal documents prohibitting prosecution. I'm interested in seeing what kind of research will come of this project, and I'm honored for the opportunity to be a part of it.

that brings up another question: What's the legal stuff with this, JP? not that I expect they could, or even would, but would just like to know..

I'm not worried about government tracking. I'm worried about releasing my personal information on the web. Anyone who is online can get access to your personal profile and read your details.

anyone who knows your (real world) address could find out everything about you, and here your only giving general info, or specific info that applies to so many, that there's not much to worry about there. If you're worried about your ip address being tracked, use some proxies and such.

hehe...if you're really worried about your personal details being posted on the net, try going to Google and doing a search on just your phone number (in the standard xxx-nnn-pppp form)...

Whats so personal about knowing what kind of system u run? or ur skill sets? If you want to participate. . . stop whineing about "Personal Information" and sign up!

The "personal information" that we are talking about is only what type of computer you have, what operating systems you know how to run, and the most personal: have you ever worked in the private sector, government, education, etc. I mean, it's not like we're asking for your social security and credit card numbers, current address, previous 3 addresses, etc. etc. If you are THAT privacy conscious, then by all means, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't sign up, because I don't want to have to deal with you!

I agree with JP, what the hell is up your peoples asses????? excuse my language...... i mean all it is is a little bit of info to let people know what kind of experience you have.... and its OPTIONAL!!! If you dont wanna put it in, dont, and dont apply, its really not that big of a deal!

I think it's kewl, JP's got me worked up w/ the whole largest wargame yet thingie, wahoo, lots to play in. The only legalities I can think of might be w/ yer ISP gettin' jiggy if you try to run some of the canned stuff, they might have some sniffin' goin' on and ban yer tooshie, if you go nutz w/ a scanner.

I'm one of those people that registred with a .mil e-mail address *gasp* ;)
Really, honestly, the average military personel isn't much different from a civilian (we just went through lots of military training)...most of us don't even know what 'big brother' is up to (even most of the officers)....

I'm wandering who exactly will run the box (AO team, JP, or maybe a government agent of some sort?) and exactly what OS it will run-I'm guessing some distro of Linux (RH, Slackware, Debian, Mandrake, Suse, etc?)

I think Jp said in one of his threads that the actual network is going to be housed w/in AO territory, as far as the software it's running, I don't think he should tell, that's half the fun of it.
