ill not pretend to know whats happening or the reasons why. never had any dealings with JP and Jup has never harmed me but i would swear in a court of law that traffic has dropped of dramatically since jup took over. the truth and nothing but
Just wanted to let all know....
This thread's link to the main page was killed by Jupiter
but I found the link in my history!!!
im started to think this is just what jupm wanted.. all this attention, all the members getting riled (sp?) up over this. I bet they expected JP to start a thread like this, and figured we'd start a sort of "Rally round the founder" type thread, and possibly bring this into the public eye, getting more attention. Since im sure they have enough money to pay for the best lawyers etc, and i bet they just completely ignore it all. .
dont worry, it was killed by neggo, not jupiter... they wouldnt give this thread the time of dayQuote:

"You know what where saying just give JP the moneyyyyyy," If not your going to court and getting sued "You know what where saying JP lets own AO together," Say to them to give you back AO with the money, and AO will be a better place! I know it :).

As for AO and JupMedia, we will see what happens. It indeed was sad to see all the features go such as IRC, mail and subs, but what could we do?Quote:

We've done lots. We've made offers to host IRC and mail. Users are now independantly hosting irc servers, and I've got a few domains available to users... just nothing AO related. We've banded together as a community to help each other out. AO was once a great place. It's a shame to see it die. JupM is about to lose this site. Sure they'll still have the pages, and own the domain name but that'll be it. They're about to lose their users, the key users that make this site what it is. They're going to be left with the script kiddies and crackers. This website will become a place for hacking webbased login scripts, pirating software and selling their souls. There's a crack in the hull, water is flowing in and we're sinking fast, yet JupM isn't even trying to bail the water out. It's the cyber-titanic. They've got enough life boats for themselves, and they'll just sit and wait it out, while everything around them dies.

Woah,
I can't believe this kinda thing is happening? I've learned so much here from all the seniors that took the time to help me to be where I am today... God why does it have to die!!! I hope somehow things will all work out. This has been such a great place for me to come and learn, jeez I don't even wanna think about any poor future for this site... It means so much to me to have people that will respond to my questions or cheer me up...
"reguardless of race, gender, or creed" -- we all know...
There have been so many relationships that have been built here that won't be able to go on if everyone leaves... but what choice do you all have... I wouldn't want to come to a site feeling the way you do as well as if I was in your shoes...
I'm, at a loss for words here... somebody help me out...
--Peace :(
Anyone from Jupmedia wish to comment? Anyone? Hello!?
The last thing this site needs is the loss of its current senior members.
I hope that this matter will be resolved diplomatically and AO will rise again. If that is not the case then some members here have listed some other interesting forum sites. I am surely going to join one of them, but it is sad that AO is ending like this way.
I hope JP comes up with something like AO so that we can be a great community altogether once again.

And Jupiter Media will soon fix the good content wont be long now until all the senior memberss have left then Jupiter Media will really have turned this into the script kiddie heaven that Jupiter Media has foreseen!!!

I can only speak for myself when I say I visit AO a lot less since it went to JUPM..
The Adds and lack of good stuff on the frontpage realy killed the fun for me..
Well so long.. and I'll be hanging around on unerror and other ex-AO-members sites..
An old saying in our area
Well try this.. How do you get a average Security Forum site..?.. Sell a successful exceptional Security Forum site to J.M..Quote:
How do you get into small business ?
You move a big business to Queensland
JP had a successful formula for this site.. This is not to say it was perfect.. Unfortunatly JM has used a formula of it's own, that works well on forums of a different nature.. well I should say "has started to apply"... ..
Still looking for a replacement forum site... This is still OK for me.. for now..
You know it is scary.. but I also get the feeling that this site is starting to become [shock] Pro [/shock][horror] M$[/horror].. or have I just become "pro-*nix" to to great a degree (heck I have one system full time *nix and 2 on a secondary basis.. compared to None 18 months ago) .. we grow and move on....
Cheers
it is funny undertaker. this place had a larger following when appealing to a smaller grouop
Face it, JupMedia hasnt even posted anything in regards to this, they are now treating AO as a lost cause and after the court case that they will most definately loose they are most likely going to just let it go to its own shits.... or take it down....
 /me bows down to the ub3r-1337 h4xx0rs Jupiter Media :rofl:Quote:

The topic is really a matter regarding a contract and therefore, not something that should be discussed here but since many AO members are getting the wrong impression, as a representative of Jupitermedia, I will present the other side of the story.
Before Jupitermedia acquired the site, we told JP generally how we thought it would be necessary to run AO if it was to survive as a free site for members (you will remember he was trying to sell it for a long time before we came to terms). He agreed with this and said as long as we provided a site that concentrated on security issues, the site would continue to be healthy.
A contract was signed that outlined obligations on each side and we paid a substantial amount up front. We've lived up to all of the obligations we've made.
For our part, we will continue to do what we've set out to do: to provide a site where security issues can be discussed. We asked for members to tell us what they thought needed to be improved, and where it was reasonable for us to do that, we tried. We have attempted to resolve many of the complaints we received about various features (especially the AO system) but a lack of site documentation (one of the contractual obligations) has been a hindrance.
Traffic is not down. It is at virtually the same level last week as it was the first few days after we moved it onto our servers, and it has been fairly consistent during the entire time we have been running it. Traffic did change a slight amount after the front page's list of threads was changed (another chnage that was made based on member's suggestions as a way of emphasizing the site's focus on security). It went up.
I don't know the motives of everyone who has been suggesting there is something dishonest going on here. Some people seem to be trying to launch competitive sites, so their motives are obvious.
As JP indicates, this could end up in a court, so it is not going to be possible for us to debate the issue here; for one thing, it violates the spirit of what members have told us the site should be: a security forum. It would be unfortunate if this is hashed out before a judge but that will be fine if that's what it takes for the truth to come out.
- JupMan, for Jupitermedia Corp.
Hey first Jupman I bet you earned each and everyone of those points.
Jupman---> let's see how can I make myself look cool to the members. Idea give myself alot of points.
Ok it is the simple fact that if the site is getting the same or around the same mount of views why are you not going to give the man his money.
(Pre-note i am probably going to get banned for this.) **** oh well.
Ok you guys were not like most corporate teams you would probably of left alot of the things the same. What is the old statement don't just change things to change them. Oh well.
So first you screwed up the man's site, then you wouldn't pay the man. Last you try to hide this thread that is just sad.
So let's see
(Before Jupitermedia acquired the site, we told JP generally how we thought it would be necessary to run AO if it was to survive as a free site for members (you will remember he was trying to sell it for a long time before we came to terms). Well if I tell you that if you buy a car and just pu gas in it and drive it everyday. for a couple years will that car still run NO. why probably because there are things that need to be done to keep up the maintenace of the car. Same thing with the website.
Listen to your members. I haven't been here that long but I have heard about how it was a while ago it was definately better from what I have heard.
I don't quite know what's wrong with your company. Or your thought pattern but let me tell you something that maybe you didn'y know. Guess what this sight is commonly talked about in books that is how a lot of lpeople heard about the sight so that there is a waythta will get you more members.
But oh well another day of ranting.

Yep. I can see this in court...
Also, I do not see JP getting the site back either. I think he has bigger fish to fry, bigger projects in the works and hotter guys by the poolside to look at.
I wish both sides the best of luck.
My general rule of thumb is that the one who threatens to sue is usually the oneQuote:

to blame. If any one is harming the site, it is you. New members who have arrived
only recently don't give a **** about your pathetic whining. Get over it and grow up.
When you had the site it was down every other day from DOS attacks from your
old school enemies. If you didn't cover your ass when you sold it, chalk it up as one
of life's lessons learned and don't impose your problems on users who don't
even know you, much less care about your intricate legal dealings.
It's nice to know that people don't even take the time to read a thread before they formulate their opinion. I moved the thread from Newbie Security Questions to General Chit Chat. I did read the thread: it's not security-related, therefore doesn't belong on the main page. It was posted in Newbie Security Questions with the only purpose of having it show up on the main page. In my opinion, this discussion doesn't even belong on AO, let alone in a security-forum.Quote:

i know that me and tonybradley are registered at Security Forums .... i dont browse and post at that site much because i still like AO better ... if i have a problem i'd first come here then go to SF.com .....

Just a note...the worst agitators in this thread are people who signed up in 2001, who havent posted anything in a loong time...hell the yhaven't been here in a long time...my guess, RL friends of JP who he brought back with him in this attempt to poision the well on AO. For those of us who are new here read the attrtion.org info about JP before you rush in to support him, from what I can tell the number of blackhats and script kiddies has drop after he left.
Although you have to admit that is has gone through a lot of revisioning over time, especially insofar as the AP system has been added.Quote:

I'm not really sure what to think here---because the posting public don't see the contract, we don't see the ad impression logs, and we don't see the documentation (or lack thereof). Not that I'm complaining, or asking for it to change, I'm just stating facts.
That's a good point there Terr. However, Christina did point out there is a VBulletin mod that resembles the AP System, and mods are well documented. However, the mod and what JP implimented could be totally different and not the mod at all and is all assumptions.Quote:

For anyone who is confused by "intmons" post in this thread and missed the brief spamming by "him" The "gold dot" account intmon used got 0wn3d last night. The front page had 25-30 postings on it asking silly questions and such. It was quite humerous but short lived . I am assuming thats why jupman has greens instead of a gold dot. The troubles are sad , but hell i love to see a corporation get roasted.(especially a marketing corp.)

As you can see, Intmon was not owned at all. The person banned was named "Intmon" and the admin is named "intmon.": http://www.antionline.com/member.php...&userid=136211
Heh, he was given lots of greenies because he was banned the first day he joined, and that made sure he's not banned again.Quote:

Just out of curiosity, to whom would you be referring here? I went back and looked at every post in this thread...there was 1 and perhaps 2 names I didn't recognize who were members in 2001, and they made up a total of 3-4 posts in this thread.Quote:

And maybe you better check out the owners of attrition a little bit before you start referencing them as good sources of information. That street runs two ways.
I'm just curious JupMan... if the traffic hasn't gone done and everything is going good... why won't you pay JP his money as he claims?
Next, I want to make it clear, that I believe this site has slowly gone down-hill since Jup took over... features were taken away (and if you say getting rid IRC or having less forums on the front page was based on a majority of user opinions, you're full of ****), members have left, and no one from Jup is active in the community, making it impossible to improve this site... :(
Finally, I will no longer involve myself in this... I don't know the facts of the case nor do I truly care. I also recommend that AO members do the same... ignore this thread until something final comes out of it... because we don't know what really happened and for now we sound like complete idiots trying to accuse people of actions that we don't know about...
= Cheers, jag291 =
The number of blackhats hasn't really changed... The few that are here that actually know their **** are also smart enough not to go around talking **** about being uber-leet haxorz and **** like that... (and yes, there are a few members here that have made quite an impression on the underground hacker scene) As for script kiddies... that number has increased. Not only gone up, but now they are making more posts and becoming "senior members" and "addicts" The total traffic has remained about the same bacause a lot of the older members have left, and they are being replaced by crops of script kiddiez. My post count has gone from 15 a day to about 1 every 3 to 5 days. So if the average person posts 5 times in a day (just an estimate) that means that it took about 3 people to replace the traffic that I was causing.
As for documentation, I can believe there isn't a lot. This site has been modified quite a bit from the original state. But grab 2 or 3 people that know php/mySQL, and you can figure out anything you want to do. Its really not that hard to go through a few files and firgure out what the final result is. Especially considering it is based on a well documented system. Just go through and look for the changes. (anyone remember the diff command?)
As for the DOS attacks mentioned by rcgreen.. are you talking about the IRC server? I will admit that the site did go down a few times from that, but it wasn't really that much. And you make a good point... if JP's "old school enemies" have to rely on useing a DOS attack, it really makes you wonder if they know what they are doing.
lumpyporridge> where the hell do you get your information? Was that a recruiting tool for some aliance.... "Hey look we hacked intmon's account, join us and we will help you, otherwise we will hack you and ban you" and in case your wondering why I bring up aliances again... oh wait from what I have heard, they are now called "groups" sorry.
albn> omg really, someone banned jupman...no one ever told me :D
now, in their defence... if the list that was "found" by a couple members a while back really was what it appeard to be, then that would explain a good portion of it. And there were rummors about traffic generators and other various things to showo highter stats. Now I am NOT trying to say that any of that is true. I have never seen any proof of it at all.
Oh yeah.. and one other thing. . WHAT THE HELL ARE SO MANY PEOPLE ASSIGNING ANTIPOINTS IN THIS THREAD FOR?????? This has to be the biggest waste of "greenies" I have ever seen. Common people... you wonder why the AP system is such crap??? Its because you waste your time assigning postive ap's to BS posts in threads like this, but don't do a damn thing for the people that are actually making posts to help other users.
This has got to be one of the most common statements I've seen, but the point isQuote:
that I believe this site has slowly gone down-hill since Jup took over
that people have been saying it for the entire time I've been here! It couldn't
have been getting worse all that time. There were some incredibly annoying users
around back then, and silly flame wars, retarded questions on "how do I hack
my girlfriend's hotmail?"
Things haven't changed all that much. There is good and bad, both then and now.
As for traffic, I think each member goes through a cycle. You join, lurk a while, and you
get involved. You go through a period of intense activity, and then slack off.
Maybe later you bring your activity level up again. Don't mistake your own personal
changes as changes in this site, or the world at large. It is still spinning on its axis.
Now you know ;)Quote:
albn> omg really, someone banned jupman...no one ever told me
No, they are called greenie groupies now. A little bird told me.Quote:
oh wait from what I have heard, they are now called "groups" sorry.
Well, I don't know about IRC, but I know there were lengthy discussions about restricting non-technical forums from the main page and to my recollection, the majority, including myself, WERE in favor of doing such. I still think it is a good idea, even if it does lower traffic and banner impressions. What is unfortunate, however, is that logs were not verified prior to the sale. I would think that in those months of negotiation that JM would have verified the logs and that JP would have his $ at the time of sale. So while the intent of removing forums from the main page was clear, it's unforseen ramifications towards JP are regrettable. Maybe this unfortunately will all be chalked up to experience.Quote:

But yes, we did choose to narrow the main page and that was one of the FEW (in my observations) recommendations that JM has acted on.
O Jesus Christ, will someone just close this damn thread and let it drop!?! Like it or not, JupMedia is now the owner of AO. Many of you have tried to speak with members of JupMedia and have failed several times. Accept it. There not willing to put to much into AO. Accept it. The situation, however it goes, is not really any of our buisness. I would like to think we should all support JP nad leave AO never to come back but truthfully, none of us know the details. Accept it. Just make the best out of what the community is now and understand AO has and will under go many changes. Take advantage of what is available.
hjack
i am happy that the forums are still up .... at least they didnt close them lol ... i will stay with AO till the end .... i am a member since Aug .2001 with a bebiboyx1 account and have read a LOT .... i will leave if they close the AP system or the Forums ... i mean we can control part of AO ...if a Script Kiddie comes WE ban him/her .... and we decide what to post in the forums and there are still old AO members (moderator and admins) who care about the site and help us keep it clean and focused on Security .... as long as we can share our ideas, news, and knowledge in the forums its all good ...if the site becomes to *****ed up we can leave and join another Security related website and make it our new homepage and visit it after we come home from work or school or (at work,in school ) :) .... nobody is obligated to stay here ...feel free to leave....when i get bored and do not feel welcome anymore i sure will leave .... and by the way i just wanna thank all of you guys for everything .....
That's a bit harsh ;)Quote:

I have to admit that in almost 2 years forum activity it's the first time that I'm so desinterested in AO. Something changed... blame jupm? read rcgreen's and souleman's post.
This is not something to be discussed in here (like negative already said). The post from jupman gives an idea what's going on but we do not have an objective point of view. So this is my first and last post on this topic.
