Hey Hey,
No Offense intended Eg... but that's the worst example I've ever heard... There's such a thing as 'caught in the act' that immediately implies guilt... and it's as good as proven at that point.. since eye witness accounts are almost guarenteed convictions... At very least the person is guilty of possession of stolen property even if they didn't steal it.. Eitherway that example requires a crime be commited... This is a quest for information... at least until otherwise is proven.Quote:

Innocent until proven guilty is great... but It's how you come across proving something... In society we've chosen guilty until proven innocent in most major criminal cases in the past while... in most cases in general. However just because the media puts that twist on things, doesn't mean we have to conform.. isn't the background of IT Security, of "Hacking" if you will, anti-conformity... To assume someone has malicious intent is a bad way of looking at it.. Take a look at the Full Disclosure mailing list... or half the other ones... they respond to everything.. they have large readership and they're popular and lively... If we responded the same way that they do.. perhaps we'd have a popular and lively site...
Do you really think that the money supporting this site would be pulled out if the "dark side" of computer security was broached from time to time? I highly doubt it... I've seen IT companies advertising on porn sites.. Those people that believe actually talking about security will hurt this site are people that have no knowledge and are here as a place to "chill" anyways...
I'd love to see some darker, more evil stuff covered...I also think it would attract readership...
I fall back on this a lot.. but a full article on the escape sequence in hayes compatible modems would be malicious... but full of useful information to those tryign to learn and also somewhat outdated so it'd be insignificant.. With the number of large sites posting exploit code, and methods of attach... this site posting that information isn't suddenly going to come under the wrath of the outside world... That's just people that are full of themselves talking..
The site rejuvination.. ther's no doubt about it... but it needs everyone to stop whining at the same time. This thread started off as a valid question.. now it's more people bitching about what's wrong... and what should happen.. no logical debate, no valid reasoning... nothing.. just bitching and moaning..
Here's my take.. with an example question..
"Man those dicks at school are so mean, we have to use a special login to access the internet and I want the password... someone tell me how I can get the password"
-- Don't answer it... they implied their own violation of the rules and law..
"So how would you bypass or gain access to a computer"
-- Answer... they could be learning at home and you couldn't be dismissing someone who could viably contribute to the community...
Two other things need to happen..
1. Stop promoting the site as a tech support site... that's killing it.. and dragging in a bunch of useless members that no one really wants anyways..
2. Stop saying google it.. and I'm just as guilty of this... sometimes people are demanding and idiots.. they deserve it.. but when they ask a valid question.. and you say google it... all you're saying is that you yourself have no idea of the answer to the question..
Anyways.. everyone stop your damn bitching about the site.... it's getting annoying.
Peace,
HT
