OK, here are my thoughts/suggestions:
The AP/Reputation system now stops at 11 green dots?...............so it doesn't matter much what you get after that? You will not get killed through the AP/Reputation system. Nor, for that matter, will you progress any further.
I am not happy with the idea of changing something which is basically pretty irrelevant at this point, after such a traumatic upgrade.............in my opinion, I would not even look at it until 6 months down the line. I particularly say that, as it should tie in with an overall policy of where this site sees itself going?
Trashing schools and burning books will NOT bring you a better society!
At the moment we are getting probed by all sorts of Trolls and scum. I would not support a suggestion that removes the ability of the members to "police" their own forum.
A lot more work is required if we were to contemplate that?
Of course...........you could leave it all to the Admins and Mods..........but we will do what we feel; and don't you dare even question..........let alone complain.;)
I have been a PROUD member of AO since 2001 under different handles and I Must say all the years I have been hear posting on AO this website is ugy as phuck!. Bring back the OLD AO!
ALSO, 'WHOEVERs' idea it was to change the website, GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS AND WAKE THE PHUCK UP! You did it for the WORST and NOT for the better. This site is phuckin ugly. bring back the old AO!
Cheers, Michael from fort myers florida. ;)
BTW, IF ITS NOT BROKE DONT FIX IT! Leave WELL ENOUGH ALONE!!!
I would prefer to see all the info on the left as well... personal preference. what does it take to get someone to modify the icons (quote, edit, etc) so they remove that horrid white border?
finally... what is the deal with the login? I am experiencing, even if I choose for it to remember me, it doesnt, and when i log in, it returns me to the same page. Now if I login then click a post then click the AO icon at the top i get a different screen, finally shows I am logged in. A bit weird i think.
Excuse me linlover929...but for your information I opposed the AP system from almost the day I joined ( 4 days after to be exact )...and since I've been here I've negged less than 10 people, most by request to get rid of a problem at the time...Quote:

I agree, if there would be personal preference on the left site, the width of the text area wouldn't be so large either, and I think that will improve the comforty of reading.Quote:

Also, is there anyway to expand how many threads are seen on the main page? I only see 10 and I see no way to change that.
***EDIT***
Ok, a quick check on the browser thing shows that it is browser related. It works fine in IE and Opera (8.5) but not for FF (1.5.0.6).
Ok, we'll try it on the left for a bit, see how many prefer it.
I prefer it on the left - adds a bit of 'old style' back in to it!
I just noticed that there is a icon in the url. Don't know if it was there before the update but it looks good :)Quote:

ok. If you turn off the whole ap - rep system, I'll come out of retirement. Like anyone gives a S**t about me or my contributions.
However, you guys should keep in mind that the karma system of closing threads was one of the things that made this site Unique. I mean if it's just reps, what would distinguish AO from SecurityFocus or the other numerous boards out there?
And my two cents about the upgrade...
Haven't you guys ever heard of a dev environment?
Sorry intmon and JPnyc I'm in the middle of a huge upgrade myself and that just made me feel good. Thanks.
The forum was dev-ed 1st, and it was tested by us and by the moderator crew. We couldn't make it live for everyone, but we did test.
I know that - Just ribbing you guys. I mean, AND I AM NOT LYING. A users car caught on fire in the parking lot this morning. Somehow is was a result of the upgrade. Really - I was asked if the upgrade had anything to do with the fire.
I may be a Bastard but - Damn
Believe me, I understand. mnstrgrl worked on this 48 hrs straight this weekend, and 24 hrs last weekend, when the upgrade failed. I spent a couple days styling the forum to look as much as possible like the old one, and have been dealing with this forum since 4:45am. Upgrades are never fun.
then why are you still having to iron out look/feel? Shouldn't that have been part of your QA/Dev environment first? To me it still feels like this was rushed out and never tested. Upgrade path issues, hack mod issues, look issues, etc... looks rushed and shoddy but that is just my opinion.Quote:

We're not. This was the look we agreed upon. We matched what we had as closely as we could, but the fact is, it's a different version, and there are cosmetic and functional differences. But it had to be done sometime. Couldn't run an ancient version forever. Wasn't even supported by vbulletin anymore, and there were so many customizations that it wasn't really a vbulletin format anymore anyway.
JPNyc since you seem to looking at this thread often I will pose a couple questions for you here.
First, is addicts gone or has it been made that you can only see it once you reach addicts status.
Second, what were the post counts change to, so that your title will change?
Third, I am not sure if this is an error or not but the search function is acting up. I tried to search for a post by a person prior to update and wouldn't allow me, then I tried to search for a post after the update and it still wouldn't allow me.
Fourth, a black dot means that the rep. system for that person is off, but I can still assign RP's to a person that has a black dot. Though it doesn't matter it is odd that you still allow this to happen.
Addicts is hidden, but present. I have to check into the 2nd, it's the default setting though.
I will take care of the search issues tonight. The re-indexing uses a lot of system resource and is best done at night.
I'm not sure that, even though you can assign rep points, that it actually has any affect. I will check tomorrow.
This design is so ****ing lame.
I have to agree this design IS FOR ****!!! Again, bring back the OLD AO.Quote:

This site is a phucking disgrace! LEAVE THE WEB SITE ALONE!!! Your ****ING IT UP LEAVE IT ALONE. Your bestest friend Michael from fort myers florida
this is weak sauce... i can't believe they did this. it looks sooooo shitty
OK.............if a few weeks down the line you feel the same then say it again?...... hey, this was a MAJOR UPDATE was it not? I would not expect it to go smoothly, and, after the first attempt, you reign in your ambitions a bit;)
This is still "work in progress", but, hell's teeth, at least we have made some progress?
Sure..........it isn't like it was........ well, I can remember going from DOS to Windows 3.x...on to Win 95.....on to Win 98, then SE then ME. Not to mention NT 4.0 and 2000 at the same time............. then XP.
If you cannot handle change, you shouldn't be in IT.
This is the "first cut" and we still have a way to go...... but at least we are going forwards?
My views:)
Sorry nihil, but I disagree...this is not in my opinion an upgrade...a major change yes...but an upgrade no...no offense is intended to those who worked on this...but, to quote er0k:
hopefully, it'll get better...but I'm not going to hold my breath. ;)Quote:

It looks like it was hurried...it should have, as others have stated, been done off-line and the old AO left up until it was ready.
It doesn't look ready. ;)..like you said...it looks like a ' work in progress ' still.
Eg ;)
It seems like those who complained the most about the old design have found something new to complain about...
Hah! EG~old chap, I think that we need to watch our terminology here?
"Upgrade" is what we are told going to MS VISTA will be?........... a bit like going from Win 3.x to 95? OK, then 98 was an improvement but what was Win ME? and XP? It really means "the more recent version of the software"
Hey, I have dealt for years with people who went through those transitions and complained about the new version.;)
This needs to be bedded in. It is a bit of a difference because we are sort of trying to fit a size 12 foot into a size 9 shoe?
I feel that we must give it a chance or we will be the equivalent of stuck with MS Access 2.0 until hell freezes over. I have actually been there:eek: the angst of converting from Access 2.0 to 8.0 was enormous, as you had to re-write about two thirds of the bloody stuff.
Just my thoughts mate:)
Hi Neg,
I never complained about the old design...in fact the design was one of it's best features...it made the site unique...different from other vBulletin sites.
The look and feel of the old design was one, if not the most attractive feature.
You can't honestly believe this looks better.
Hi nihil,
No I agree...the upgrade is in the background...the structure...but the surface and the features are, as you say, ' a 12 foot into a 9 foot shoe ' ;)...which is why I said it feels and looks crammed.
I hope you're right that it'll improve...right now it's a wait n' see. ;)
Eg ;)
Eg > If you never complained about the old design, then I didn't address you in my post.
The main point was to upgrade the forum, even though you're claiming in all your wisdom that this wasn't one... The upgrade was a success (which doesn't mean that there aren't issues left), and whether or not you like the design is personal opinion.
About "the old AO should have been left up until this one was ready": you're a forum admin yourself, you should know that that is impossible as there comes a point where you need to make the transition. The new version has been up for a month or so (so it's not like mnstrgrl just downloaded some upgrades and decided to see what would happen...), and was pretty thoroughly tested - again, it's the transition that's the tricky part...
I thought I would weigh in now... I for one dont like this new format but im not gonna go on and on bitching because I personally have no way of changing anything, just wanted to say I dont like it no offense to others who worked on it.
hi Neg,
I'll admit when it comes to major forum upgrades where the original forum is laden with modifications to the point where it is virtually a unique entity I don't know the problems associated with downloading a copy of the forum/datadase while leaving the original up while you work on the copy...and then upload the new version in it's place.
Still...I am offering honest criticisms...suggestions to help the site...or so I believe...I could just be sitting back laughing my a## off at how ugly it looks...but I'm not...I am trying to help in the limited way I can.
Eg ;)
i see fewer than 300 peeps in the site since the upgrade. used to always 500 plus or more. right now there are just 133 users online.
anything to do with the upgrade or the rest of 200 odd surfers are taking a halloween break?
Dont confuse bitching with feedback and constructive criticism.Quote:

Sorry The Texan but I have to agree with chizra...it's fine to just state your opinion, but for a comment to be considered ' feedback ' you have to explain why you feel that way and offer some remedy if you can.
It's one thing to say: this looks very nasty
and
another thing to say: this looks very nasty...and this is why...and if possible, this is what I think you should do.
The former has no benefit...the latter does.
The site looks like crap because it's cramped and looks flat and bland.
The AP system should be tossed for a more adult approach...reward and punishment is OK for kids and for training canines...we're supposed to be adults. The only redeeming quality the AP/Rep system has is it allows the membership to act in a group as a mod when the mods are not available to perform their jobs themselves....which could easily be resolved by adding more mods and dividing spots according to time zones.
Eg ;)
How hard would it be to try to mimic some of the old layout? I undertsand that many of the old features will be missing. I guess many of the changes that users requested over the years had to be eliminated for some back end issues. They were modifications that were "hacks" into the old code. However some of the cosmetics of the old site shouldn't be to hard to duplicate. Actually I kind of like the new interface. It has a raw feel to it. Now we can spend the next couple of years "requesting" other features. Moving from access 2.0 to 8.0(whew..what a jump!) was an important move. It will take some time to learn how to navigate it.
come on neg don't play the politician. you know the old version was much more appealing. regardless of how many updates they do to this unoriginal, terrible, ugly ass AO, it will never even be closed to the same layout we've enjoyed for the last 5 years. Jupiter Media could at least give us the courtesy of saying they want to destroy this site, rather than act like its going to get better eventually by all these lame ass updates. it looks like a ****ing twelve year old put this forum up and slapped some advertisements at the top. In the past, I've only complained about things that mattered, for instance, IRC being taken away. But jesus neg, like i said before, you don't like this new layout any better than any of us.Quote:

This **** is so weak, and even though I haven't been that active in a couple years, if it's not changed for the better, I'm gonna miss AO, cause its not even AO anymore.
I got a question that had nothing to do with the layout..
If you view the source of the site, you can see the ccs. Shouldn't this be an extern file?
I like the new layout for the home page...the old version seemed to have a jumble of options in the left-hand column. This new layout seems more streamlined (although I can sympathize with those who fear and reject change :P).
Eg, I guess you are correct I really dont like this new layout at all personally I think it sucks its all crammed together and I dont know where anything is. The reason I didnt state this before is because I was trying to be polite and I realized that as much as I may bitch personally they wont change it just on my opinion alone. But alas you have pulled my true feelings out of me :) I mean no disrespect to anyone personally involved I just dont like this layout at all.
