Well as far as I know the release date is around August but it seems so far away. I wonder if its too early to install it as my main OS :P

Actually no, Google doesn't use Unix. They use a custom version of Ubuntu, which, in my opinion, is crap to begin with.
Yahoo uses Unix, hotmail uses Unix, and, when that worm was going after Windows Update a few years back, MICROSOFT used Unix to keep from being taken down. :) Remember? I can't recall the name of it, but I know it was a worm that went after SCO and Windows Update servers, and SCO stayed offline for a while because the hosting company they Microsoft used to keep from being taken down and handle all the extra traffic from that DDOS, was a company called Akai, who use Linux. SCO wouldn't use them since they were Linux users and didn't pay them for a license, but Microsoft had no problem looking the other way to get the job done.
What did you mean by Sub Standard Hardware? I have FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE running on two machines right now, one of which is this:
Celeron 433 MHz Processor, 192 MBs RAM, 8 MB ATI video card, and it's running FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE and I have Enlightenment E-17 installed and running, which, if you've ever hard of it, you know it has out of the box special FX and shiny gold looking windows and makes snow, rain, and fire on the desktop... It's running on THAT machine, no lagging.
It looks better than Aero. Aero needs what a 64 MB card minimum? For the same effects?
I know you can find E-17 pics on google, I'd say check them out, it is pretty impressive. Specially considering how old the hardware is it's running on without grinding at all. And by the way, I didn't install the drivers for the graphics card to allow for 3D, either. So this is all running as is out of the box.

Whenever someone related to me buys a computer and wants me to take care of it, I get tired of cleaning up spyware after a while, and viruses and trojans and backdoors....
After a while, I'll just install Linux on their machines, have it run the updates in cron, and show them how firefox works as opposed to...well....Firefox on Windows. And tell them to use a different office suit. That literally fixes everything for me. I don't have to spend 4 hours cleaning up infections anymore, because they can't get infected.
Sure it pays the bills. Microsoft in the Dos and win31 days was very, very profitable. Unfortunately, Microsoft probably wont survive 10 years from now if they keep screwing up their marketing models and breaking their own patches.
I've tried this as well, with mixed results. My folks didnt like it at all. Neither did my nurse or my auto mechanic. They all convinced me to reinstall windoze. Kids, in general, love it. I set them up with mac4lin (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac4lin) and they were self sufficient from the get-go.Quote:

Regardless, they ALL require sys admin attention. Some more than others but that (IMO) has more to do with the user rather than the OS.

IBM was able to switch from being a hardware company to a services company. That saved them as Microsoft got traction and starting eating their lunch. Now google is doing to MS what MS did to IBM. We will see.
I don't find it boring at all. Unless of course Microsoft Windows 95 is exactly the same as Windows Vista.... The it would be boring. But they aren't the same thing, so the this VS that still works just fine, because they have all changed. Every version of Linux and BSD out right now, is much different than the ones that were out then. Hell, the ones out right now are different from ones that were out a year ago.

Anyone who writes software knows that the ONLY software that REALLY pushes hardware, are computer games. Doom did it back in 1993, Doom 3 did it a few years ago, and now Vista has given both a run for the money by being the only OS on the market with hardware requirements topping most 3D games.
Why is this aloud? Why doesn't anyone ever get mad and say something? Is the thought of 12 people saying you're a big meanie head for bashing Windows REALLY worse than spending 300 dollars upgrading hardware to make it happy?

I point out I have shitty hardware that can't run new stuff and the first assumption is that all I do is play big games? None of my machines have more than 512 MBs of RAM....What new game am I going to be able to play on that that was released in the last year? Seriously?

I support MS and will support Windows 7...sounds like its going to need some locking down..as most systems do...because Vista was too damn secure for the average user...MS is disabling alot of the security features by default. That was my original post....

Did you actually look up Enlightenment on google? The new E-17 makes Mac Os X look like DOS. The bottom of the desktop waves or ripples, or both, while a fire is glowing on your desktop, and you can make it rain, snow, or just rain or snow. It looks simply amazing. It blows me away still.
As for ease of use.....Have you ever installed Windows? The installer is a text based POS until you get some of the system going. THEN it's GUI based.
Installers for other OSs have become fully graphical, while Windows remains looking like it did for XP and maybe 2000. Windows 2000 of course, being the best product Microsoft made in the Windows world.
Microsoft hadn't sold a product THAT good since they were selling Xenix (It's Unix!).
So, MLF, let's say someone such as myself, who can't afford a Mac, and can't afford a new computer at all though it kills me because Doom4 is going to be out sometime in the future and I can't even play the original because my video card is screwed, meaning right now all I can play is up to UT2004, and only on ONE machine.
The fastest processor I have, is an Intel Pentium 4 M that is going at 3.06 GHz. No dual core, no quad core, just the normal one.
RAM? The most I have in ANY machine is 512 MBs.
So, for someone like me in need of an upgrade and can't afford it at all...What would you recommend then? Nothing? Of course, because you said you recommend Macs, and Windows. And I'm saying I'm part of a growing population who can't afford to upgrade to either one.
I find an OS that allows me to at least run newer software on my shtty hardware, and you say it's *NIX VS Windows crap that's tiring... Do you not see that as just a LITTLE bit insulting? Or at least to people who financially can't go buy whatever they want?
Ease of use...Hmmm.... Let's see here:
User A wants to burn an ISO image to CD-ROM. They are running Windows. Options? Pay for software to do it, and then navigate through some menus. Other option? Download a trial version and sign up for the spam of the month newsletter to get to burn it.
User B has Linux / FreeBSD / Whatever / KDE installed....all of those come with the software to do this out of the box, and to burn an ISO in KDE? DOUBLE CLICK IT....A window opens up with K3B, which goes on the net for you to check the MD5Sum automagically for you, and then you click on burn.
Which one is easier?
How about installing software? If you download something off the net, you double click an installer and Windows opens the installshield whatever to do it. You go through the menus, and reboot.
Linux / BSD / Whatever..
Non GUI:
pkg_add -r anything [Enter}
With a Gui:
....Click on "install"...Go through menus....
Setting up a home server:
Windows :....Not sure, never could get IIS working.
Linux / BSD / Whatever:
Put the installer CD in, or just download one from the net and installer in a similar manner with one command or two clicks. Start the service, done.
So how is ease of use even a consideration when it comes to an OS these days? That is the exact reason the my OS is better than yours is a valid argument today. Things have changed so much that most people still think they have to compile software to use it on Linux. And of course people think it's hard to install things or in general use it.
after an OS install what happens? Which one is easier? Well with Windows you put a hardware firewall in place so you don't get infected before you have a chance to actually install updates.
With Linux, you...Already have actual packet filtering built in, and the updates can ALL be downloaded at once, no "Media player has to be done separate" crap, and the only reboot is if a Kernel update appears.
And games? What game doesn't work with anything but Windows TODAY? One way or another you can play pretty much any game on any OS now. It isn't 1998 anymore.
And as for one of those last comments...WHO got jumped on? I got tag teamed by two people who didn't even bother to read what I actually said.
Anything else I missed? Or is rebooting between 40 updates somehow good for production?
And another thing; If you proudly state you make so much money of the unfortunate events of someone else, how the hell am I the bad guy? You said idiot users buy you wine.... I think the original post was about Windows 7 not about whether *nix is better and MS sucks....or MACs are too expensive.
I work with computers...it is my career. I support business systems ....all MS. I didnt tell them to buy it, I just support it....and they pay me to do it.
I do not belittle them for buying MS...I smile and say "yes...I can fix it"
