this just makes a bad day worse... these bills are becomming more lame than ever! who are the morons who make these?
many of u ppl probably already know about the SSSCA bill but for those who don't plz check the link above.
I'm not sure of the words looked for in e-mail, bit I know the phone system uses stuff like anthrax, assassination, President, bazooka, stuff like that. A tape in a room somewhere clicks on when one of the words is heard.
I have become exceptionally glad that there are other countries which aren't in the pockets of the US. I mean, think of the SSSCA, then think of foreign manufacturers of non-cripple/spyware hardware... To think they'd comply is laughable, what government REALLY wants us govt/industry-controlled hardware to be running for them? :) As for this... Well, it really depends on what kind of precedents for 'reasonable evidence' arrive. It could go badly, but only time will tell. Making a racket of having bad credit or denied accounts in a bank due to un-releasable government suspicions will certainly hit a chord in the US marketplace if it becomes common.

No one is actually being executed for not being patriotic, or breaking into a computer system. When people post that things are going to become like 1984 in every single privacy related thread, it gets a little repetative. I should remind you that for the moment, you still have comeplete rights to say whatever the hell you want, and are still protected by a system that while broken, is quite functional.
Secretfire, Your missing the point. Just because things are alright for the most part, at this moment, doesn’t mean that they’ll be alright tomorrow.
The norm, for the human condition, if you consider history as being valid, is oppression. At the beginning of the 20th century, people were fighting to give their CHILDREN the right to only work a 16 hour day, in a so called ‘free world’.
Many people have given their lifes for the freedoms we enjoy ‘at this moment’, in wars and in protests. If you give the oppressor (big buissness) an inch, it WILL take a mile, history shows this. Only by opposing them, and by this, I don’t mean going up on the roof with a rifle, can we even hope to come to a happy medium.
If a device is put in place to monitor our actions, and that device is meant for good, their WILL come a time that it is used for evil. Or a lease a free mans definition of evil.
As an illustration, take Ezpass, as were told, its meant to keep traffic jams from happening at toll booths. But now their clocking the times between tolls and giving tickets to people who come in under the allotted time. It will not take long before insurance companies make sure your telling the truth in the distance you travel to work and raise your already ridiculously high rates if your 1/10 of a mile over, and penalize you as well. Who can say how far this will go. But go it will. This doesn’t even take into account the record being keep of where you go and what time you go there. God only knows what some ambitious political mind will come up with for that.
Now for the issue at hand
How easy do you think it would be, to get your name taken off of this watch list, when no one will even tell you your on it.
For the sake of argument, lets say ‘kill the president’ is actually a key phrase. And you, in an email, are discussing a bill, being reviewed by the government, and you write, “It will not kill the president to sign it.” Your name is now in the database and your mail is watched more closely.
Now im not saying that this could be an actual scenario, I used this to illustrate how easily something like this could happen. And if you think something like this can’t happen, just look at how many people’s credit rating have gotten screwed up in records we do have access too and how difficult it is to correct.
The carnivore database is queried on request, for big business, for a price. Yet you or I have no idea whats there. Its freedom of information for big business only. Combine this with all the other databases, which is what their doing right now, and factor in the competency of the people writing queries. Now that’s a scary thought
Yeah jcmcb, Bush may say he hates big buisness, but if his little war gets him re-elected, he'll dump every bit of social security into it. And I'm gonna have to agree w/ bimmer, americans are lame. . .more than half the world has been enduring terroristic actions for decades, now, we take a blow, and suddenly the Pres. wants to act like he's the saviour of the good people of earth, while the rest of the world looks at us, and says 'where the hell were you tweny years ago?'. . .
