Ill tell you what ive found...I am running the same configuration at home but through a hub. I have found that you need to boot the 9x box first. This puts it in listening mode, then power up the xp box...Its the only way that i have been able to get both to read eachother. :-( I have winXP pro (corporate edition) And I am a staunch anti-micro$oft person, but i found that I do like this version of xp. I have had no problems other than with recognition. Also, make sure that you have NO firewalls running as it will not allow others to access your system, even if they are on the lan and you have shared your drives. I hope this helps.

if that first part were true and you believed it...you wouldn't be telling him to switch OSes....... you know XP sucks, as do I, as the many people who have purchased it are finding out.

I've done this... sometimes, you just need to re-install XP, but what I did was install NetBeui, Client for Microsoft Networks, and TCP/IP protocol. Make sure that both comps are on the same workgroup, and don't forget to check your cables (sounds dumb, but it's happened before.) Make sure that both boxes get their IPs automatically - other than that, don't change default settings, or all your work will be destroyed. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know...

i said that in that situation it is true personally i have never tried to network xp with 98 but xp si very compatibale with 2k pro and server...at least in my experience it has....as for changing his O/S's i oly suggested that cuz persoanlly i didnt know if xp worked right with 98
