Agreed.

I don't see where the guy was asking for this...he was being polite, and asking reasonable questions, and had the misfortune to connect to a bunch of idiots with nothing better to do than screw him over. I hope like hell he was messing with you, and that he knew better. If not, in this case, it's definitely a case of what comes around goes around, and I'm glad I'm not in for the retribution those guys deserve. Childish and stupid, not to mention practically criminal.

It is things like this that cause people to become script kiddies. Now, once the guy finds out what happened, he isn't going to want to learn how his computer works. He is going to want to get revenge. With a little help, he may have been ok, and could have been productive with his machine, but instead, he has been taught that screwing with other people is how it is supposed to be.

Well when I said I thought it was funny, I was not laughing at the newbie. I hope mom and dads computer did not have any important files on their computer. I was laughing at the supposed experts professional conduct, or should I say total lack of it. Anyone that has worked in the field has had to deal with these sorts of questions or even more silly ones. Like I said the people involved answers to in other posts here will be looked at with suspect and assumed totally wrong.

I will admit, this was a bit funny. But, everyday someone on this board complains about script kiddies, and other cyber jerks that make our lives more difficult. This is the kind of stuff that makes script kiddies, and people who want to trash computers. sure they may have fell for it, but now they know that deltree c:\*.* /y erases a whole hard drive, can you guess what they are going to be doing to any computer they can get a dos prompt on now?

I know that the net doesnt really offer much amusement at times. but making your own (if this was real) is sometimes too easy. I work with people this mis-educated every day at my job. but that doesnt mean i have to tell them how to destroy their computers.

Just remember, every prank you pull on a n00b is just another quick way of them learning how to become one of the "bad" types. now your n00b knows deltree, next week maybe format/autotest, week after that they will figure out how to mess up the registry. who know. or maybe they will now sit in every chat room you do, making it impossible for you to give out real advise, their is nothing worse than going into a help chat and having someone say, "dont listen to them, they made me erase my hd"

i think that ErrorFroz was pulling someones chain..... if he was dialing up from a "light flashing modem" wouldnt he have a dynamic IP?

not necesarily...my DSL modem has blinking lights on it...i believe cable modems do too, so its quite possible that he was on a static IP and still a newbie with a blinking modem...


and NetSyN, i am one of the people who gave you negs, it has nothing to do with being 'trigger happy with the new "we need equal balance" crap'...i would have given it negs anyway. also, when i first read it i saw no indication that you were not involved OR that you were condeming what was done, it looked more to me like you were just going "haha look at the idiot n00b!"

Well, I think that this guy will definetly be motivated to learn how a computer works now. I remember when I first started working on a comp (386 dos 3.0) I messed it up several times on my own without anyones help. (Can you say Fdisk.) What did I do? Started to read the dos manuals and learned how everything worked, even down to the command.com, io.sys, and msdos.sys loading sequences. I hope that this guy will be brought about on the same path. I know that when I messed up my computer I had to learn why... Hopefully he will want to know also. But IMO what those other guys did was just totally uncalled for. Are these people really that ignorant? Well, I think the only ignorant people in there were the ones telling the guy to do all that stuff.

Since when have colleges used dial-ups?? Well, that guy might even think his mainframe as a modem.... :p Or they might have cable modems or something like that and the guy just calls it "a modem".
The fact that there is no reverse DNS configured still supports the possibility of a real modem but I doubt it.
