um, i dont know where you are from, but where i am cable isnt free; you pay a cable company, which in turn has to pay stations to carry them, which pay for shows.

here's a question for you: supose i dont watch a whole show, but only a small ammount then i look for something better. at what point am i obligated to watch the ads and in what proportion? do i have to watch an add for viewing 10 seconds? 20? 30? 90? at what point does it become "required"? what if i have to use the bathroom? am i suposed to go durring the show(which is the ONLY REASON that i have that particular station on) and miss part of the story, or am i to become a thief by going durring the part i dont want to see anyway?

i can think of a billion reasons to walk away durring an add(as oposed to durring the show i'm watching), but not one(other than satisfying some money-grubbers) to literaly force myself to watch every add they show.

also, i think an important point is that the networks sell add space based on predicted ratings for the show(if they think the ratings will be high, it will cost more than if they expect low ratings), and once the show/add has aired they correct for what the show's ratings actually were. not once have i heard of a correction based on ratings so subdivided as to show about how any people actually sat through a spefic add. "why not?" i hear you ask. well, they KNOW that people are going to go to the bathroom and change channels and go to the fridge, ect. and they also know that the PERCENTAGE of people to partake in this is going to remain about constant and they KNOW that everybody who watches the whole show or parts thereof is NOT going to watch the adds. that is why they gear the adds for each show twards the demographic that watches the show. this makes the adds interesting for the people watching the show, and those who arent interested in the adds are NOT going to be interesed in buying the products. these are the people who change channels and such. so i guess that i'm basically saying(through the haze of sleep deprivation) is that they know its going to happen, and they arent losing any money anyway.

No one is forcing them to put their worthless programs
on in the first place, and no one would cry if the screen
went black.

TV needs a whole new business model.
It needs to be strictly "pay per view".
Charge whatever viewers are willing to
pay, and lose the advertising, since
people aren't watching them anyway..

I do not own a TV, and I'm not suffering
from it.

Do you know how much the cable companies pay?? I don't think you do. What you are paying for is the cable that connects your TV to wherever the station broadcasts are recieved. If you think your $40 a month are paying for all those shows than you have been sadly mislead. And is also paying for also those different networks, I think you do not fully understand the whole cable TV thing.

Do you understand the topic of this thread? The topic is that people are using recorders to competely skip the adverts and watch only the show. When you are watching a show then you are probably watching at least a few adverts anyways, if you are recording it then you will probably watch no ads at all.
Do a little research first then post something with proof. That way you can shut me up. :)

First of all that made no sense, so plz delete it and I'll delete this. Second I'll refrain from hitting you with negs because I want this thread to stay extremely positive so more people post to it. But others may do so. So I would advise you to actually post something.

an FCC ruling in 1957 stated that we are free to receive anything broadcast on public air waves, that would also mean we are free NOT to receive anything. that choice is ours.

advertisers pay to have their ads 'broadcast' and the expected popularity of the broadcast sets the fee. When they start paying me to run their ads from my VCR, ill start playing them. The TV stations who state that we must also record the ads and play them are contradicting the us government (fcc) ruling on air-wave freedom.

with this action they will try to charge more for their ad time with no benifit to the public. ****'em.

I just use the mute button, ads arn't so annoying if you don't know what the hell they're talking about.

They are giving you something, shows that you watch, why should they pay you on top of that?? They don't give enough already? Those shows cost a lot of money.

Did'nt they also have another service like Tivio that went through a bunch of lawsuits then went belly up. Then somebody released a way to add another hard drive to it to increase the space for movies. They even have VCRs that will edit out the commercials and tv's thaat will mute them. The entertainment industry will be forever a tit for tat situation. Just like all the hoopla around the Sony cd fiasco. It defeated computer copies until someone figured out they could defeat it with a magic marker.
