My answer would be that it depends on what you want to do. I have used win3 all the way up to win2k, and if you primarily want your computer to do things like browse the internet, work on documents, and that kind of thing, I would recommend windows 2000. However, with that being said, I have had problems with windows 2000 and playing games, not really sure why, but frequent game crashes were pretty common and I didn't really have that problem with XP. I also am not really thrilled with the direction Microsoft is heading with security in XP, have heard rumours of it so intertwining itself with a hardware configuration that your computer could literally stop working if you change out a card, and of course the whole thing with them being able to monitor stuff on your computer doesn't really sit that well with me. Of course, don't guess I would have much choice when they decide to EOL Win2k...i think it is a couple of years from happening?
Either way, my recommendation would be 2000 for office type use, but if you play games, go with XP...

I don't know if it has been said yet but there are many versions of Windows 2000. I recommend using the Pro version not the Home one.

disk partitioning
I bought a disk partitioner today at staples. I reformatted my hard drive was very lucky to do so, don't know if I will remember or do as well next time. But I am going to see if I can use this thing I bought to run two Os on my system. It was 69 dollars hope it works if I use it Auntie
