Turn That PC Into a Supercomputer

The idea seem cool.. but..

the super performance will be limited by the slowest link in the system.. or the bottle neck.. in a pci card config.. the data i/o will be limited by the PCI Bus speed same on the pcmcia card use.. also access to reasonable memory.. while systems memspeeds are high.. you will be limited by the pci or whatever mobo buss that is used..

geez never thought I would be cynical.. prob just jealous because I cant get one now.. or be able to afford one in a years time..

well then i'll drop my plans of buying a p-4 but this does thing doesn't tell anything about RAM
i thiught super computers need a lot of RAM well mine is 128 mb so lets wait n c!!

Thats crap even if the processor was able to do all that;

1. It would be so f%#$ing expensive it isnt funny
2. you would have to buy a motherboard of that capablities
3. almost all people wouldnt need it anyway ( except me ;)
4. if you would want a very good computer just buy a dam server it would be cheaper

Well, it will only cost about US$25k to put one of these together when the chips hit production, assuming they stay on schedule. That will give us time to find grant funding, a rich uncle, or swing a deal with that Nigerian who keeps sending me these emails. Hmmm ... wonder what OS would work best on this?

Galium Arsenide prolly? DOD applications were using 40 GHz GaAs chips back in the early 80's, so I can only imagine where that technology has gone by now. (I'd be surprised if they've gone above 40GHz, but prolly have tremendous on chip parallel stuff.)

However with these chips I suspect, if it is not actually a hoax, that the focus is more on the breadth of the architecture rather than the frequency/stamp rate. these kind of multiple channels would have some unreal race condition possibilities, so I suspect secure environments with existing common operating systems would be a poor choice. ;)

Man with these chips there is going to be a massive surge in technology everywhere. Even small labs without much funding could have a more than ample workstation to do work on. I can't wait to see the results.
