BTW, I use Gentoo occassionally and it works quite well. Yes, it does take a long time to install, but you learn a lot in the process (it's about as close to Linux From Scratch as you're going to get from a proper distribution).

Besides Gentoo mirrors are bigger filled with more packages constantly updated with specific gentoonized ebuilds. Can you compile progs depending on your Processor, arch, tweak the compile flags yourself ?
No, Suse is good, but its just precompiled like practically every other distro.
I'll always be more up-to-date than you ,even if you have 20 cd's of Suse.. And I have better benchmarks, meaning I have better speed, control, heh .. maybe even more stability if i don't take dev-packages.
Yes it has the bootsplash from Suse, Yes its portage is based on FreeBSD ports (but made better imo ), ... but isn't that what opensource is all about ? Aren't we all greatful to Linus, Isn't it all based on what he did ? Yes, it is.

Such as what? Most of the stuff on the SUSE CDs is software that you can obtain elsewhere (emerge packagename usually does the trick for me). Sure, it's nice to have it all on CD and not have to wait for it to download, but then you're paying for loads of stuff that you probably don't want.Quote:
I'm not bashing SUSE here - it was the first proper Linux distro that I paid for and I was happy with it for some time. However, just because it comes with more initial packages doesn't instantly make it better than any other distro. Some of us like to be able to start with a minimal install and then build up - something which SUSE (last time I tried it) didn't let you do and indeed shouldn't because it's not targetted at users who want minimal installations.
