Ah, come on now Angelicknight, you're not that bad :D
As to the Me OS, it was built to perform at home, stand alone, as a gaming platform. This it does well. However in these times, you really do need to consider the upgrade to XP, Pro if you can spring for it. This is a far superior OS for the world of today.
Without getting into the whole *nix v Windoze debate, the reality is that the majority of home users are using some form or other of Mr Gates' finest. Which is why I've suggested the XP route.
By all means try out the *nix flavour of your choice, check out Gore's profile for the installation guides to almost all the varieties out there.
Me, being me, thought I'd try out 'Yellowdog', D/L the ISO, cannot go further as the MagicISO I've got is the free version, limited to 300 MB.
And then I'm told that Ole Yella is for the Mac !!!!!
Until then, learn the system that you DO have, learn what it IS capable of, and, more importantly, learn what it cannot do. Protect yourself from harm, learn and educate others.
Finally: Enjoy it (I.T. [groan])

Spybot doesn't catch anything because it's a spy itself!

sneaky huh?

I'll have to hoist up the Bull **** flag on this one. Since a multitude of us use SpyBot S & D, could you provide some evidence to support your statement. I usually just don't bend like a reed in the wind when someone offers up something stinky without any proof. And I'm quite sure others would have the same interest.
cheers

1. I believe that someone brought out a "Spybot" sound alike that was infact spyware?.........I am sure I have read warnings about it in the past............maybe even on the SpyBot site? I have run the proper SpyBot for a number of years, and never caught it doing anything suspicious.
EDIT: This link sort of refers to it............I think that SpyKiller was the one I remember being mentioned

2. Windws Millenium edition is OK if you give it enough resource. For gaming on not so powerful machines I would still go for Win98SE.
If you have a PIII of around 933MHz and 128Mb of RAM running WinME and you go to XP with 512Mb of RAM you will get a performance improvement of around 25% from the OS and maybe 15% from the extra RAM
Linux distros tend to be less demanding, although I have beeen experimenting with Linspire(Lindows) and that is pretty demanding, because of the extensive GUI stuff. It runs quite nicely on a PIII/533MHz with 512Mb of RAM.
You also have to factor in HDD speed and videocard performance, and the possibility that some older windows specific peripherals won't work with *nix and may not be supported by XP :(
just my thoughts
