Hey Hey,

BBQ is recognized by most, if not all, english speaking people.. Bar-B-Q is also an abbreviation and one that I've never see... the full word is barbeque. And it's not a butchered word (like u and r)... it's a recognized abbreviation/acronym... As for quick reply.. That's so you can type out a reply quickly without having things like the site code tags and file attachment available... It saves you from loading another page, it doesn't mean here butcher the language.

If you were going to try and make a point then you should have used BTW (which I used)... it would have been a much better one, however it's still a recognized acronym... not something little kids type because it makes them 'cool'..

As I said I'll neg anyone I see who is too lazy to type full words... Use all the abbreviations and acronyms you want... but ppl is laziness... and u and r are letters.

What you are proposing is no better than people using skiddie speak to make themselves look cool. You expect us to all have a predefined list of what is proper abbreviation use on this site and what is not. Those who are unaware of such list will belong to the lower class. The only difference between your way and the skiddie way is a different set of grammar and abbreviation usage rules. However, the concept remains the same. You believe you are better because you use a higher form of language.

I still see once in a while an acronym of which I am unaware of and must look it up in one of the numerous netiquette guides available. Ones that everyone uses, but I can't remember because there's just too many of them. I understand your point where a post is so butchered it becomes difficult to read even for those of us speaking fluent English, and I can only image what it must be like for those of us without it. But what you are trying to enforce is just another way of separating yourself from those you believe to be beneath you based only on thier usage of language.

Don't you have bigger problems than the abbreviation usage of someone you've never met?

So until you can provide a list of specifically which acronyms we are permitted to use, I suggest you refrain from enforcing your rules.

BTW (no pun intended), I'm going home to Brampton for the holidays. If you host a get together I would definitely come if I am able to, sometime during the last weeks of December would be good.

You are writing Peace at the end of your post and on the other hand starting a war now thats something cool..... anyways do u have any habit thats been there from quite a long time say suppose 5-8 years or so..... n someone say forbid it...... i think would be very difficult ..... Same with me...... And im not what you call butchering the words its just when i type something at one sitting or like i normal way of writing or rather talking with some one else..... Now i know how important is this to use full words or present the language in its original format..... And you can see that from my tutorial i try to present things in a manner full way......

Its my habit and may be doesn't look good at AO but only thing i would say is that there is no rule define here at AO regarding the short writing or stuff like that... if there had been then certainly one would try to avoid this..... If you'r really hurt by that then try putting it in Rules and Regulation of AO.

Fanacool, that last post you did is actually pretty decent. I personally don't think there is anything wrong with using an occassional abbreviation. However, I don't think a whole post should be done in "IM language". There should be a certain level of "professionalism" when we use the internet to convey ideas. IM arose out of a need (when ICQ was entirely dependent on the packet size of UDP and limited the number of characters to be transmitted between "IMers"). You don't have those restrictions here. Certainly it may speed up your typing but if you practise (i.e., use full words with minimal abbreviations when posting) over time your speed will increase. I learned to type fast with "proper english" in IRC. I use my fair share of abbreviations that are common but not to the extent of the first post here.

I also don't think this is "starting a war" by opening up this discussion. We shouldn't be afraid of opening discussions up and presenting our ideas. Personally, it's a pet peeve of mine ever since I got a full essay (yes, an essay worth marks) submitted entirely in IM (I always heard of these but thought they were myths). While I take more stock in the information someone provides, it does indicate to me that someone takes pride in what they post if they take the time to present their viewpoint or idea in a well-thought out manner. Perhaps that's just my educational side showing.

As for the topic at hand, I think many come looking for security or help in dealing with an issue (security or otherwise related) and end up staying because of the community (I know, HTRegz, it's not about security -- we've beaten that one to death a few times I think). That's certainly what happened to me. Granted there are exceptions. I'm rather convinced that HTRegz just likes to come and bitch at us because he "lurves" us so much. ;)

I don't think there is anything wrong with this being a good computer community where ideas can be shared. The reality is that security does go through everything from how you deal and troubleshoot hardware (do you lock up your hardware at night?) to how you deal with the nitwit who installed the All-in-One Wonder Card and wonders if he can purchase more IRQs since he's now used them up (real story! I swear! He was sent to Radio Shack because they sell them in packs of 15 and 25, don'tcha know? :D)
