Yeah you were correct they were locked down a little, at least on the one's I saw they removed the serial ports. On some models they just pop out anyway. But anyone could put a sniffer on the inside interface and see what they were looking at. :D Not that I would do such a thing.

I've seen the Carnivore GUI. It's not classified and can be seen in a number of books, one being the ethereal packet capture book that Syngress put out. It's nothing more than point and click filters that you can easily do in any sniffing product. It was dummied down for low skill FBI IT personnel. It wasn't designed to capture *all* internet traffic but rather a very specific set of data on a single or small group of users. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a contract with a COTS sniffer developer who produces something called CarnZilla.
The idea that the FBI abandoned eavesdropping technology without a better replacement is suspect at best. Read between the lines. ;)
Or read where they tell you straight out they abandoned it for a commercial solution.
I wonder if Carnivore will get leaked to the net ....

If I were going to employ something that would utilize NIC, CPU, and storage space and it was unfeasible unless I could "band" it together, I'd suddenly be looking at the SETI project.

Damn that is a good analogy. The SETI project is so daunting they farm out snippets of data for PCs to crunch on. That data, in comparison, would be small, tiny, microscopic; compared to what Eschelon and Carivore are supposed to do.
