killerbeesateme brings up a point that I have pondered for a while.
I too have an “OEM” version of XP Pro I purchased when I built the computer I am on right now. Since ALL the components were new it clearly fell within the acceptable guidelines of the software license, as well as the guidelines for the distributor who sold it to me ( bought many of the components from them ).
I have installed it twice on this machine ( the second time only a week after the initial; I had to learn and adjust to the new OS before I could do decent install ).
Since, I have changed video card ( original ATI card “fried” for unknown reason ), upgraded the motherboard, processor and memory.
Each time XP “phoned home” .
Now, as I recall, I have run out of “acceptable” upgrades without further intervention from M$.
My questions:
1) what “hoops” will I have to jump through if I do another upgrade?
2) would the fact that I accepted and used the “verification tool “ make any difference? I.e. would it extend the amount of upgrades ?
And just a comment about the original quoted siteIs he saying that M$ takes NO responsibility for this ?? Omitting the obvious, how are people who can’t afford new machines that support the requirements of their newer OS’s expected to cope ? I have repaired / renewed several machines in just the last month that can just barley run Win98. They can not afford to go out and purchase new machines just to browse and read e-mail. Hell, I have machines of my own that can’t use anything past ME ( though some have been “ converted” )Quote:
"There's a growing chance that the people whose machines are being taken over are running older systems which aren't really securable," he said.
Perhaps someone from M$ could respond? ( and don’t tell me no one there reviews this site! )
to killerbeesateme: Glad to see someone else can’t do a short post! ;)
But you might consider hitting the enter key once in a while! Makes it easier to read.
P.S. The machine in question here is “duel” boot linux. Just use a second hard drive for the Linux as hda, grub defaults to hdb where XP is installed because my wife usually won’t let me near it unless there is a problem.
