NT is worse than Crack, see why

LOL, Actually YAST2 is used for install and upgrade too so Yea you can but use the CDs or DVDs it's easier.

I can't get a DVD burner for a while because I need to save up for a new power supply. Mine has a fan that seems off. The fan that sucks air up is like failing and almost stopped last night but hitting it with a pen cap fixed it for some reason but I want to replace it first chance I get. The other fan in it seems fine but oh well. And I need to get a better fan for the CPU in that box too, I want a better one.

And my AMD box needs some better coolent.

With all due respect, I don't think that Gore is a true "Windows basher" as he has made some very reasonable assessments in previous posts and tutorials. OK NT4.0 may not be the finest effort from MS, but they had gotten it pretty reasonable by SR6a? and NT5.0 is quite good.

If you have an opportunity to look at an NT4 box, check out the System32 folder and explain to me why there are those 4 files with .bas extensions in there. Strange that there is no runtime QBASIC proggy to support them? (that shipped with DOS 5.0).................err like MS tried to develop Win95 and NT4 at the same time and did not have the resources?

My personal experience has been that NT4 is fine for office type environments and NT5 (Win2000) is even better. I have had good experiences with Win98SE and even with WinME (If you give it 384Mb or more of RAM)

All the problems I see, are the result of user ignorance or carelessness (NB. I use the term "ignorance" in its correct English meaning)............I am actually more concerned about other things............

Last night my wife completed an application for a job at one of our local libraries (that is a council/local government position)................one of the requirements was a knowledge of "Microsoft Windows 95 and Office 97"!

NT 4 does come with qbasic. Had much fun playing gorillas in the breaks of a training course a while ago.

My last company (which I left in 2003) still used Office 97 - we even installed it on the new WinXP boxes because it plain did the job. The only downside was that Outlook 98 didn't have the view all emails as plain text option without installing extra software.

I liked NT4, it had its bugs but it worked pretty well even on fairly low spec PCs (P300/128MB) until you started loading other bloatware (ie6, mcafee etc).

YaST can be used for upgrading from SuSE 9.0 -> 9.1 -> 9.2, although I'll admit that when I tried going from 9.0 to 9.1 it my little lappy coughed spluttered and died. Future upgrades were clean installs...

No, it doesn't.................someone has added the qbasic runtime program, just like I did..............yeah! gorillas :D It is an interesting demonstration of code efficiency, the whole game is only around 70k?

The give away is that these four proggies are in the System32 (32 bit) folder, yet are 16 bit applications. I have just fired up a "raw" Win 95 box (950B, build 1212) and it does not have them in it. The story I was told was that both Win 95 and NT 4 were behind schedule, and the Win 95 guys gave the NT team some of their code, that was being developed from the previous Win 3.1x.

The Win95 team knew what those proggies were and removed them, the NT boys forgot.

A lot of companies over here still use Office 97 because, as you say, it does the job. It is perfectly adequate for most day to day activities.

I also have Office 2000, 2002(XP) and 2003 and must admit that in a commercial environment, I would not be inclined to upgrade Office 97 on any sort of cost effectiveness criteria.

Actually, I used to use it on a pair of Digital PI/166/64Mb with IE6 and McAfee. Never had any problems. OK they were development (labrat) rather than production machines. There days when I come across someone who wants an upgrade on a low end box, I recommend Win2000 (NT5) as it is also very forgiving in terms of specifications.

I remember testing them against a PIII/667/256Mb.................the boot up was only 2 seconds slower for the same mirrored test environment :) The PIs had 4Mb graphics, the PIII had 32Mb.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=258265 implies NT4 came with qbasic. Seriously, those machines were vanilla installs and they had it. Maybe it's a regional US/UK thing? Unlikely, but I can't think of any other reason for the difference!

Okay, I'll try to beat that... ;-)
When I first joined my old company in 1998 they had a load of Dell Latitude LM laptops, P133/40MB with Win95 installed. The company's main product was just being ported to Win32 from Unix using NuTcracker, running on NT 4 of course. The poor consultants had to try to use a fairly heavyweight MIS on NT4 on that hardware. Painful.

Red Hat network is a Nazi. And yes that is what was pissing me off. WTF!!! Why aren't I using YUM? For these old red hat boxes. I like loading 9 when I need to deploy something. In this case it was a Websense sensor. :)


//EDIT Gore, you have an older box so there may be a chance that you can take the fan apart and clean it, then depending on the hardware, put some graphite or oil on it.
