Tiger: If you are not interested, then do not reply to it. Besides, it was not about Paris Hilton really, it was about the breach itself and what companies are doing to fix it. Perhaps it should of been titled as "Cell phones vunerable: what are companies doing about it?"

Being someone who has had to work with T-Mobile reps before I can tell you easy they are not to secure at all.
Cell phone companies in general are insecure, and quite a few which I won't name until someone says money, are idiots and have easy to guess default passwords. If you really want to piss on them just go to a cell shop and wait until someone does an activation, usually all you have to do is call the person's new cell number and press a few keys on the keypad of your phone and boom, you have complete control of their password and voice mail. Heh, funny huh?

A few months back Mrs. |ce and I were helping a friend out who had been severely beaten by her husband. She had in her possession his cell phone - and on the voicemail for it was quite the threatening message from him - threatening her life, our lives, the works...and all this after appropriate protective orders had been put into place and 2 different trips to jail for him.
Well, to make this (long, drawn out) story short, brightboy decides (finally - it would've been the first thing I did) to cut off his cell. So here we go, off to our local Alltel shop to make inquires as to how to acquire hardcopy of that voicemail. The (female) manager there informed us that since the account was in his name, only he could access it. She then went on to inform us as to the exact procedures they use and what data is used to verify that he is who he says he is over the phone, and that anyone in possession of said data could, in fact, own the account. Gotta love helpful employees.... We got the hardcopy message off the (reactivated in his name billing to him) phone account with no problems whatsoever, and he got 15 years for each count (3) for a total of 45 years in prison, not to mention (I'm sure) a whopper cell bill for that first month after reconnect since he cannot disconnect it now (passworded to a new pass he doesn't know, plus he can't reach 'em from jail), and his (soon to be ex) wife is in possession of the phone.
Social engineering is a wonderful thing sometimes. Maybe the bubba he learns to call sweetie will beat on him occasionally too.

|3lack|ce: funny how things can work to your advantage. And gore, yeah, I guess it goes to show, that whatever you say can be used against you later. Nothing is 100% secure, but you would think they would atl least provide a stronger password.

Remember to tell her "Use it whenever" and make sure to call some other countries whjile he is being charged. If you need I'll get you some phone numbers for other countries to call that cost the most money ;)
You should be glad that he had a bad lawyer.. As that is technically illegal and not something that most courts would look at if it was contested. It would have been real easy for an attorney to prove that you got that information through illegal means. Not to mention that he can go after her for identity theft if and when he finds out she has the phone. Definitely not something I would go around bragging about as it could easily be grounds for a re-trial.Quote:

Paris Hilton is the most worthless waste of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen I've seen. She has nothing to contribute, and in fact detracts from the common human intellect with her repeated paid-for-appearances on Television (c'mon, you don't think they really PAY HER for that simply stupid not-real life show, do you? You know it has TRUST FUND written all over the accounts payable ledgers for it's continued existence.)
I wish it was her bank account, not her phone, that had been cracked. I'm so tired of manufactured celebrity.
But the point is that mobile phones ARE vulnerable...and we keep seeing articles about it, and people talking it up...but I have YET to see a big surge of "Security" being used to sell mobile phone service/hardware. I guess it hasn't reached enough of a media fervor yet. And I wonder if the phone manufacturers are doing their part to mitigate the amount of negative press these weaknesses get, so their sales aren't hurt.
I think it would be handy as hell to have a headset for my phone that doesn't require a cord...but at what price?!? Thank you, no.
Paris Hilton is a worthless human being IMHO, except as a reference point for the actual problem here, and that is Bluetooth device security, with a side comment to privacy rights. Further invocation of her will bring a pathetic hailstrom of Neg's from my insignifcant pile of greenies.

Simo - I think they demonstrated Bluetooth over long distance at Defcon last year, didn't they? they hacked someones phone at the con from 1.5 or 3 miles away, with an antenna and such? I'll go look for details...don't recall...but it was frightening, that much I DO recall.
Correct, and good point mohaughn. The Secret Service protects important officials and dignitaries as only a small part of their role. They are THE agency you will deal with on any counterfieting investigations. C'mon, didn't ANYONE see In the Line of Fire? Eastwood is THE MAN, and John Malkovich' portrayal of the madman is GENIUS (well, it's not much of a stretch for him, I'd guess. John is AWESOME.)Quote:
