I'm here because I have been forced to by my boss at work. Apparently everybody in the IT Dept "needs to be diligent when it comes to security"....
So as well as constantly reminding users that they must backup their files to their home directories on the file server instead on their c: drive, I must also make sure there are no security **** ups.

Why am I into the security field? I'm not. I came here and found some cool stuff though, and I'm learning more every day, and helping others with what I do know. Information exchange is how we learn when we're done with school - and this is one of my sources. I sit here at my desk and learn all about day 0 virii releases, what's good and what sucks, new patch releases, a lot of coding I'm beginning to understand, along with some stuff about webhosting (I couldn't set up a site to save my life, but I'm learning how here, and how to do it securely). Where else could someone complain about their day and the stupid petty things that annoy them, discuss politics and current events to the point of arguments, learn and teach about things computer related, laugh at a joke or two, and slap down an annoying little idiot all in 5 minutes time? This place is akin to paradise for an old fart like me.

I believe I answered this already, saying that I wanted others to share their story so that the new people to AO and security can look at some and possibly find inspiration in similarities, or likewise. Now this is one hell of a thread... I'll say that... but it leaves me with only one things to say.

Here I thought it was an online version of Dungeons and Dragons... Post something that people think seems believable... gain life points... However you have to be careful because people can attack you... and they can take away some of your life points... if enough people attack you you lose all your life points and you have to register a new character... However there's a solution... we call them alliances.. you find a group of people and you team up on others and help each other out... Your teams can consist of addicts, newbies, seniors and others... it's all great fun... However every once in a while you can convince a Moderator to join your team.. these people are all powerful because they can remove the posts that get you attacked... or the posts that get your enemies points...
Please don't tell me I've been mistaken all along??? Here I thought I was doing really well in the game and that I was a Senior Level Moderator with quite a few life points.... *goes and cries*
Anyways... I got into security because I was a 'bad lil boi' and then as started breaking more and more stuff I wanted to figure out how to fix it and keep it from being broken again... I think that the hats are definately present.. or they were 10 years ago when I was playing with that sort of stuff.. I think that the black-to-grey-to-white transition (while it may sound corny) is very realistic... When you are younger computers give you a way to break the rules... to be bad (and when I was doing it... a chance to be bad without much chance of getting caught/getting in trouble... that part has changed now).. However as you grow up you start to see things from a different perspective... breaking the rules is no longer fun and as you get more understanding you slowly change sides. Computer security is a lot like drinking (I guess that's why they go hand in hand)... When you're a minor you love getting drunk... don't need to have fun.. just need to get smashed.. When you become legal you love going to the bar and drinking... getting wasted sometimes but other times having fun and as you get older you go for enjoyment... not to kill as many brain cells as possible..
Anyways.. I've rambled long enough.
