You should have used a noun: "advice" (Opinion about what could or should be done about a situation or problem; counsel.) From dictionary.com
English is our first language - we do know how to use it properly.
Secondly, speaking from a non-male perspective, you seem to be the one drawing attention to the fact that you are a girl. It's not so rare that girls are on forums. It's not a big deal. Can we just move on?

And I don't think there is such a thing as positive discrimination. A promotion based on nice **** is meaningless. THe true meaning of a promotion is that it is supposively based on respect for one's skills/accomplishments. Same thing here on the boards, if respect is not earned through accomplishments, skills, and actions, anything gained has no meaning and can only hinder the person.

The only reason for all the attention that I'm getting is simple. Even with almost 170 posts I'm still the "new girl in town" here. Once things have settled down a bit and more new girls get in here, I'll guess people here will soon forget that I'm a girl too. I'm hoping they will. Because sometimes, I do consider my gender to be a serious flaw for my future career...
I do think that my chances of getting work as e.g. a software engineer are less than that of any guy with half my experience. And I'll probably get paid less too. So in the current IT world, I'll have more to prove than any guy, or so it feels to me. My girlfriend is studying psychiatry though and I think in those jobs, both genders tend to have equal respect and equal chances. But the IT world is still dominated by the guys. A bit like the construction world, actually. How many female construction workers are out there anyway?
I agree wit d0pp that being promoted just for my looks is meaningless. I would soon be promoted to some position that I am not qualified for and probably piss of plenty of collegues, who might even accuse me of "sleeping with the Boss" to get at that position. Yet i many cases where both a man and a woman qualify for a certain job, it's often the guy that gets this position, not the girl.
It is disappearing but we women still have to fight against the idea that men are responsible for the income of a family, and a woman just has to do housekeeping. It's slowly becoming an old-fashioned idea but there are still many people who think that way. (And worse, not all of them are guys...)
But in general it just takes time for people to get used to the idea of another girl here on this forum. A girl with some knowledge, that is. Once the guys here stop drooling over my ****, things will be back to normal again. :D I hope...

And Katja, you are right, once you've been here for a while, you will slowly become respected for who you are, as long as you don't act like me.
But there is nothing wrong with the man being the source of income, and the woman taking care of the house, it is actually better that way for any couple that plans on having children. Also, there is nothing wrong with a man staying home and raising kids, or just taking care of the house. Hell, my brother is a housewife. I personally would love to be a housewife. I'd rather do nothing but occasional cleaning and watching the kids. ****. Kids are easy, and they can be alot of fun.

It's your attitude that gives girls in IT a bad name. You get a little experience, then start complaining that you are not being treated fairly. Why not just focus on your skills and (sorry) STFU about everything else.
Your attitude is what perpetuates myths, stereotypes, affirmative action, and keeps people's differences a constant agitating factor (in the workplace, education, politics, etc).
You are not the only girl here. You are not the only one with ****...as Dopp pointed out. You are not the only girl who knows something here. You are not the only girl guys try to "chat up". More new girls is not going to change typical male behavior. If you can't stand the male-domination of the IT industry, then perhaps you should find another career to focus on.
You may be right, d0pp, but that would not work in my situations where the is no husband but there are two wives. :D It will be even more complicated because both of us do want to have children once we're a bit older.
With my parents, I was quite lucky. My dad works at home most of the time. He's the Boss of a 1-person's software company and has several customers who make use of his services. So basically he was home most of the time, although always working. But he was always there for my mom and me. He still is, even though I don't live at home anymore.
For my girlfriend and me, the situation will probably a bit different. If she does find work, she'll probably have some office in some hospital. And me? I hope that I can do the same as my dad, find a few good contacts and work freelance. But that future is still many years away from now.
Oh, don't underestimate the job of a housewife. It's extremely hard work! And the pay is horrible, yet the satisfaction you'll get from your work makes it all up again. :)
Actualy, historicaly programing has been the area where more women have been recruited than men. Especialy in the days before high level programing languages became defacto. Not because women where better than men but because there were more maths graduate level women. It could also be argued the first computer programmer was a female. Heard of Aida??Quote:

The tutor on a Open University course that I have just passed had a Mathamatics background. She did not seem to be held back by here gender. Programmer for a very large bank, then a systems analyst.
As for femail construction workers................I have worked in that game in the past, and I can absolutly say more/some women in the field would be most welcome :D ..................The cold hard truth though is that by and large women just have not got the physical strength for the job and those that may have the strength just are not interested in spending there working life covered in **** and having hands that can ladder a pair of stockings in less time than you could say brick layer.
