Hi Aspman,
Not sure if this is true or not...and I'm equally unsure about the health risks involved...but I was under the impression that if a woman continued to take birth control pills while pregnant it would result in a miscarriage?
Eg ;)

bcp work by shifting a womans cycle keeping away from getting to the point where eggs are released from the ovary and preventing implantation into the walls of the womb if one is released.
Thats why the pills are marked indavidually the dose of hormones has to shift daily to keep the cycle 'wrong'.
I think that applies only to the mixed progesterone/oestrogen pills. Progesterone only pills are also used, they don't run such a high risk of thrombosis but they're not as effective either.
When a women gets pregnant her hormones shift quite significantly to prevent her going through with her normal cycle and passing the egg out.
Still taking the pill could affect the development of the early foetus where the various hormones being generated by the foetus itself push the cell differentiation so you start to get your ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm which go on to form your various body parts.
Having too much female hormones floating about could well cause problems especially for a male foetus. If the mother's body can detect any significant abnormalities in a foetus it will sometimes try to natuarally abort.
The morning after pill (I think, this is without looking it up) is a very high dose of a hormone pill, oestrogen or progesterone, which does cause the immediate regection of the foetus. But this only works up to 72 hours after conception where the foetus would still be a bag of cells not connected (physically) to the mother.

What Hillary is really afraid of here is that the Consititution may be strictly interpreted, during a re-evaluation of the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court Decision, and no "right" to abortion will be found within the Constitution. Roe vs Wade was the first major instance of the Judiciary Branch creating legislation from the Bench. Which was not how our checks and balances system was supposed to work. This really was a states rights issue and the constitutional procedure would have been to change public opinion about abortion and have Congress create laws legalizing abortion. Which I admit, probably would have happened eventually. Many people do not realize that overturning Roe vs. Wade will not make abortion illegal, but rather it will give each state the opportunity to evaluate what it's constituents want and create state law governing abortion appropriately.
As for Hillary running for president. I heard that the Democrats had created a bumper sticker that they were putting on the back of their cars that read "RUN HILLARY RUN!" The only problem is that the Republicans took the same bumper sticker and put it on the front of their cars. :)
One other thing you might consider is this: when abortions become illegal (again) then that still won't stop some would-be mothers from having one. However, they have to resort to some techniques that are more damaging to their own body than a simple abortion procedure. E.g. by inserting a metal wire into the womb and spinning it around a bit, or by inserting some nasty fluid into the womb just to kill the embryo. And of course there have been more violent ways that would cause an abortion. Some punches in the female's stomach can also be lethal enough for the unborn child. (Although not many women would choose that option voluntarily.)
Thing is, like with drugs, making it illegal will never put a stop to it. But by providing proper education and lots of support to the persons involved, things might provide a much better solution.
For example, when a girl gets an abortion, the abortion clinique could provide her some additional information about safe sex.
About safe sex, no birth control method is absolutely fail-safe. I've heard of women taking the pill who got pregnant. Even a woman who was sterilized even had a child one day. And a condom can leak too. A combination of protection will reduce the chance of becoming pregnant to about the same chance of winning a big lottery but there always seem to be some winners... Basically, the only way to have sex that would not lead to any pregnancies would be same-sex sexual relations. :) Then again, that would only prevent pregnancies, not the other drawbacks of unsafe sex...

A woman should have the right to do as SHE sees fit in regard to whether she aborts / carries to term.

Basically, the only way to have sex that would not lead to any pregnancies would be same-sex sexual relations. Katja- Your forgetting True Love Waits the church sponsered no sex before marriage thing. that is another way of preventing pregnancy. I tried it but couldnt last until marriage just like 88% of the other people who signed the no sex before marriage card :)
As foxy alluded to there are more than one way to skin a cat ;)...there's plenty of ways to have sex without getting someone pregnant...not involving same-sex partners.
I could describe them but then our younger members, and a few of the older ones, don't write well even with two hands on the keyboard. :D
hi Katja! the only people that have ever said bush was trying to make 'abortion' illegal are the liberals. Even though he personally may be against abortion he could never succeed in stopping it. while it’s true that many would like to see 'roe' overturned, including Roe herself, very few want to make abortion itself illegal. late term abortion, unless it’s to protect the mother....yes. abortion on demand...yes. but abortion itself…no. many conservatives are pushing for a waiting period of a week between the time of the request for and the actual abortion A pregnant woman’s hormones can really cause her to bang off the walls mentally and she should be sure that this IS what she really wants. Human life just shouldn’t be treated as whimsically as it is.
Hillary has made this whole scenario up and thinks that the woman of this country are stupid enough to believe it. In the states where abortion had been illegal how many of those states do you think demanded a child quota from the woman living there. Nobody from any party would ever support such a thing.
Not sure on how they do things in the Netherlands where you are, but in the US - 'Planned Parenthood' clinic (yes, that's the local abortion clinic) gives some very good info on birth control as well as offering information on adoptions and all other avenues. It stresses to its clients that abortions are NOT an acceptable form of birth control.Quote:

As for your 'inserting a metal wire' - that's a 'coathanger' abortion and it can mutilate or even kill the mother as well as the embryo. The modern method involves using a vacuum inserted into the uterus to 'suck out' the unwanted pregnancy. The fetus is usually torn apart most hideously as evidenced in the anti-abortion film 'silent scream'. I'm quite sure that even the medieval medicine practiced in the Netherlands avoids the technique you mentioned.
On the 'abortion pill' aka 'morning after pill' - it's not legal in the US, although some of us are hoping and some aren't... It chemically induces a miscarriage in a pregnant mom, even one in late term (which is why the hangup - a late term fetus isn't abortable by our laws, because it stands a chance to survive outside the womb.) If they can invent a 'smart pill' that would permit only early term pregnancies to be terminated, you can bet your bottom dollar the USFDA would pass it and it'd sell and sell and sell and sell...
Punches in the stomach? You've been watching too many 'pimp and ho' flicks. The resiliency of a baby is an amazing thing - You can get them strung out on crack, have a dozen or so car wrecks, and stay drunk for 9 months and they'll still survive (and probably survive you). The downside is that with chemical addiction comes withdrawal, and brain damage. Crack babies aren't any fun. Trust me, I've helped with them before. But I digress - a punch in the gut to a pregnant female stands a very minute chance of actually injuring the baby. This chance increases as the baby grows (naturally, there's no 'shock absorber' room inside mom's stomach anymore). Repeated punches to mom's gut might hurt mom, but the chances actually killing the fetus are slim. Inducing labor by a punch, however, is a different story - so you might be careful before considering this 'abortion method' lest you wind up with a 3 month fetus dangling from a very injured mom.
Nuff said on this odious topic - let's get to the moral, shall we?
1. Katja is a bit behind the times in her concepts on abortion. We should endeavour to enlighten her further.
2. Abortion sucks, but the alternative sucks worse. Would you want to live in a world where women were mutilated daily by that verysame 'clotheshanger abortion' as described above?
3. Hillary sucks (although not well, as evidenced by Bill's seeking out Monica to handle that end on her behalf). She's profiling because she's gearing up for a Presidential bid in 2008. Frankly, I think the 'Senator from New York' needs a good bitchslapping.
Taking a shop-vac to someone peacefully experiencing REM (rapid eye movement) sounds like a primitive gig to me.
