The french are not opposed to the war on terrorism. They were opposed to the invasion of Iraq which had sweet Fa to do with the war on terrorism. Another little thing is the independant's report is inaccurate in what Chirac said. He said France would respond in kind to any terrorist attack. If the terrorist use WMD then the french response would be appropiate and that the French nucelar deteriant has been reconfigured to reflect the changing world situtation.
I agree with Aspman in that this is Chirac just trying to get attention but I reckon the French are the most likely to do as they say on something like this than almost anyother western country.
As for the rest the french and the british armies learned their lessons from the first and second world wars. They both make sure that today they have a modern and well trained army.

France was just chest thumping, if anyone really thinks they were serious, they don't know the French....chirac has political problems on the home front, and is trying a Bush manouver, blame everyone else and hoist the flag, yer fer us or yer agin us.......

While i really don't thin k they will follow through either, i have to wonder if i were the head of a nation, and france made that deleration, would i want to wait and see if he was serious, or try and prevent nukeness even though the possablility of it is so small. When does it get ho the point where even though he most likely isn't serious, the threat made is too serious to ignore?

Jewish that is also the official americain policy on bioligical and chemical attack and has been for decades. Anyone who attacks the united states with such weapons can expect to be nuked. So where is the differance?

chirac, knows full well he would never use nuclear force, world condemnation would be intolerable and their own people would probably throw a coup (funny how that word is french eh!) and nobody is going to ramp up the issue by trying to pre-empt, it's a little like MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), he know's what he is saying is pure rhetoric, and if it attracts attention from the idiots or terrorists and they try to make a point by trying to goad France into a response, then whoopee, not only will it now be France's problem, but now we will know where all of the terrorists are heading......let them do their jobs, and get them when they try to leave..... :p

Whoa.....simoultaneous posts...I can believe some of the people in France are of the same mind as chirac, but I would have to believe they are the minority, and that right thinking individuals know better, be careful what you wish for, cause it may come true....... :p

Besides, the people of France right now are more interested in keeping their jobs, and could really care less about what goes on outside their borders, it's usually the politicians who try to garner support by lashing out at others, just so they can look good.(i.e. Schroeder against US involvement in Iraq, just so he could get elected)...

Well that i didn't realize, i have never really payed much if any attention to world affairs and politics until recently, im still pretty young. I had assumed that part of the reason this was a big deal was because noone else had threatened this type of retaliation before.

But then i pose this question: It is very evident that there are a ton of people who feel that this is an empty threat coming from france, but does anyone think that it is an empty threat coming from the us? I assume that part of the reason no biological attacks have been made on us soil was because our policy on such matters is believed to be reasonable response from the us. If terrorists don't think he will do it, then why would they let his 'empty' threat prevent them from future attacks?

Dalek the important part of what Chirac said was that an attack on France would be answered with adequate force. If a group of terrorists set off a couple of bombs like a couple of years back then there would be a couple of assinations carried out. If terrorists attacked France on a scale that required a nuclear reponse then the French would be behind their goverment in way that would give bush wet dreams.
I wouldn't make the mistake of believing all the anti-french crap that has been shown on the Anglophone TV stations since they said no to Bush. That also includes the Irish tv stations by the way which disappointed me when i went home for the holidays last year.
As for keeping up with world affaires the average French person is more up to date than almost any other national group. With the advantage that they generally believe their goverment is trying to pull the wool over their eyes.

At the end of the day, when it comes to counter terrorism or counter insurgency, thermonuclear weapons are about as much use a **** on a boar.

I think his message was to those states who might harbour or even support terrorists?

Yeah his choice of weapon was totally off, I am sure a couple of tons of high explosive would be sufficient......and your right, his remarks are targeted at "Host" countries who harbour these groups and allow them to conduct themselves without consequence....

The fact that the French know their politicians are always pulling the wool over their eyes, is one of the reasons a lot of people outside France, figure the French don't give a sh*t, how many consecutive Governments have France had that the locals don't like one way or the other, yet they keep on putting them in..(geez sounds a lot like Canada).......

As for bombs in the past...what about the recent riots, those weren't because kids had some time on their hands, those were the result of "agitators" probably a few well placed Islamist fanatics to fuel the fire's....I am sure the local cops as well as Interpol know who they are, so why isn't chirac going after them.....???

As for keeping up to date with international affairs, I can beleive that only because whenever France is reffered to in a negative way, they get their noses bent out of shape...like it's a personal slight to their honour, they take things too seriously sometimes......

It's on a par with De Gaulle's "Vive le Quebec libre" during the time we were having problems with the FLQ, talk about stirring up the merde What an idiot

The riots, as I said at the time were more related to social problems. Also riots are almost a french national passtime.
I am living in paris and i didnt see any thing inside the city. Even in the suburbs where it was happening, it stayed restricted to the poor sections. I have a friend who is living about quater of a mile out side the affected areaand even he didn't have any problems. Except for the police and fire sirens going all night.
By the time it was being reported in the international news it was almost over. It was fuel more by the interior ministers Sarkozys remarks rather than any religious feeling. Him saying he was going to power hoose the ghettos and get rid of all the scum from the streets peeved off a lot of groups. The death of a couple of local youths while being chased by the police the next night was all that was need to light the fuse.
The only islamic link was al'jezzera trying to call it a Islamic reveloution about a week after it started. If anything the islamic interest done more to stop the riots than to fuel them. The news stations stopping reporting the number of cars being burnt also help a lot to calm things.

As for the rest you are right the French do take themselves way too seriously :D. Also it is not a myth Parisiens are obnoxious.
