I'm not sure if this is directed at me... however, I'll respond anyhow. Installing from source is my preferred way to install. The installed program is normally going to be faster when built for the environment it's running in and not an assumed environment.

My main concern was nessus. Nessus no longer offers source code to install from. :(

Either way. I'm working on SuSE 10.1 and couldn't be happier with the OS. :)

I'm just installed it but i did not get a desktop? just a bunch of text and i had no idea what i was doing? i was abl to log in but that was all I'm going to try again but dif download maybe thiis time it will work any thought would be great

Hmm, maybe on your first install somehow it was setup to boot into run level 3 instead of run level 5 which is the full graphical mode. If this is the case you could give the command:

$startx

at the command prompt. This would bring you to the graphical mode.

In order to boot straight into graphical mode you can do this::

you will need to edit the file /etc/inittab. You will need to be root to do this.

One of the lines will look something like this:
# The default runlevel is defined here
id:3:initdefault:

You will need to edit it to look like this:
# The default runlevel is defined here
id:5:initdefault:

Anyway, you may have already reinstalled by now. Post again if you need help. I will try, if I can.

Or instead of editing X11 which no one REALLY like, just load YAST2 or in text mode yast, and using that to edit your video settings.

I can't say that... I still like Fedora Core. But, I def. have to give SuSE props. It works great.

You better, the firt time you tried it I spent what 8 hours on AIM with you helping you set it up the way you had RedHat? lol. ;)

This is an example of why, despite all the BS, using open source can be risky. What if that was Apache and your company ran 500 apache servers? I know that's going extreme but a business risk none the less.

But there is now an open source movement in Nessus.

On the flip side this is ALSO an example of open source develpers getting taken advantage off by other companies packaging their code into devices and selling them for outragous sums. I have seen scanning appliances that use Nessus as it's core selling for 40k each! And consultants using Nessus for a barebones pen test and charging 8k for setting on their ass and printing a report. Hey dumb ass pen testers, we know what a nessus report looks like. Custom software my ass. :D

Oh back to Open Nessus there are a couple of ideas one is OpenVAS (Open Source Vulnerability Assessment Scanner) a product of GNessUS . But not much happening on either. Or even what name is going to be adopted for the fork.

That is one major advantage of open souce. If a project goes closed source, anyone with the skills and interest and take the old source code and start developing it. With closed sourced software, if the supplier decides to let it die, it's dead.

I agree with you preacher, however in the case of nessus there has been very little contribution outside of Tenable, as compared to other projects. Heck it's been months and there is still barely a whisper of the open source side.
