Im starting to get a bad feeling about this deep down in my gut. First you are wanting to be able to have a chat program work over the network. Now it has morphed into wanting to telnet to acsess other computers files. The bottom line is that you are given a set of tools to do the job and you think you have a better idea. What kind of work is this precisesly? Yes if the files and folders have the proper shares set you can accsess them via telnet or any number of other protocols. And I gotta tell you, from what you describe telnet might not be the most efficient way to acomplish this goal. If the admin has his **** together you should be able to do this via "My Computer/My Network Places" Its alot easier to do it that way and would not require anybody having to learn the command line that goes along with telnet. And lets face it..... the number of comand line proficient people in the world is dwindling.
Now i am by no means a master programer or even a mediocre programer but it seems to me like 7 different people all working on the same file would be rather inefficient. Say for example I put in a piece of code and someone else puts in something else that does the same thing.... ta da time wasted. I may be misunderstanding the situation, please feel free to elaborate if you feel like it so i can better understand the scenario. If we understand a little better whats going on it may help us identify the best solution for your problems.

Ahh, to have english as a second laguange. Please continue the subversion as long as it lasts and I'll have a laugh when your bum begins to roasts. If it is so necessary for your job to "chat" then by all means walk "the straight and narrow" however I have the feeling that is not what you are doing. If it was legit then you wouldn't be here asking a bunch of N00b questions.
As far as I'm concerned you are just another Luser trying to go against your more intelligent and thoughtful admins, so F%#k off.
*this is the worst kind of Luser, just ask Gore.*

Hi ZomBieMann77,
My real scenario is like this............
We have a software installed in our systems through which allows us to transcribing something over the net. The software is arranged in such a manner that, the files that we transcribe will be saved in .xml format and this particular .xml file is saved in my friends C drive and all the path that I mentioned in my earlier post. We have the network neighbourhood, which allows us to save the file in that particular server, let say the server name as IRID_PDC, but the real problem is, my friend is doing file in his system and he is not saving anything over the network and hence the need of this LanChat or any other utilities comes in play and for this particular reason I downloaded and installed that in temp folder ("no access in C DRIVE") and started our work and for this particular reason I was really in a bid doubt of network monitoring and hence to do something that they provided (TELNET). I really dont know whetner telnetting will be successful or not, but since there is any option present in my system and in all other systems, can we send files through or access the files from the particular drive or even make a copy of file. A part of a particular file will be done by say A and another B and this keeps on going till G and my work is to arrange all the things that happened till G, but all these files have to be sent to me so that I call arrange them all. Since there are so many work happening and all the guys are busy with their respective work, it will not be possible for them to shift from what they are doin and hence I have to wait for long hours to get a broken piece and hence the scenario.
Regards,
Williams Antony.

Hi KorpDeath,
First of all let me begin with a ""sorry"". I really know that you guys will be busy exploring things that are new and require much attention, but I too need attention like each and every Newbie. If I am making any errors in my English grammer or in punctuation, please bare with me. I am not English born. My mother tongue is not English, but as a medium for communication I have to use this beautiful language. I am a TRUE believer in Jesus Christ and please dont use words that both of us dont like to. Once again thanks for that reply, but going out to my friend and asking him/her is really time consuming and hence I think your idea may not work.
Regards,
Williams Antony.

You should always be prepared to challenge your business processes. That is what "process re-engineering" is all about.
Your colleague should not be working on his local drive without regularly backing up to a network drive. You should also have a shared network drive for your workgroup/team. This is where you put completed stuff etc.
It sounds to me that you are really looking for "collaboration software"..............do a Google search for that. There are plenty of products around
Even something like Microsoft's NetMeeting may do the job?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/NetMeeting/default.ASP
Do not use the term "chat", instead use "collaboration" and "communication". Chat implies that you are messing around, the other two imply work related activity ;)

Hi Nihil,
I tried to install but couldnt since it is asking for administrative rights. Once it asked do you still want to continue I clicked yes and something installed, but from where will I access the NetMessenger.
There is nothing of that sought in the program files or accessories.

Hi,
You will need to put a business case to your management and then they will get the administrator to install it.
It sounds as if you work in small teams? the other teams could probably benefit by having such a facility as well, and it would need the Admin to set it up initially for the individual teams.
It can be very productive as you can involve people only for what they are needed for, rather than having them sitting around in a formal meeting for an hour when they are only interested in five minutes of it.
:)
And please take a second look at people working on their local drives rather than on a server. At least that way you can enforce object locks and version control if that is a requirement.
;)

On the bridge of starship GreenTrouserSnake4....
I run etherape. There are a host of tools that will pick this up. But etherape is extremely valuable to people like me who have little time these days to look at the logs all day. I set the **** up and pay someone to look at the tedious stuff but I don't trust them anymore than I would trust some user playing around with telnet. So there are secret systems and tool only I have access too. Etherape is pretty cool because it just runs all day flashing pretty colors. People like pretty colors. It's like a cheap disco dance lighting system or something you would put in a Star Wars movie. It's good for network performance and people who like to play. They are really playing in the dark, next to a power line they cannot see. Pretty colors...
Colors like THIS that shine brightly against a black background. A large line showing you, your session, and your destination in either mac address, host name or IP. Not only that is will show in real time I might add, every connection from your box inside and outside the local network. And when I see THIS I get VERY excited. Because fun time begins.
I will fire up Ethereal located on a span port, and record every single tiny little packet coming on and off your PC, then I'll fire one up on your girlfriend or the lady in the copier room you have the hots for, who's probably married anyway. Which in some sick way makes her more enticing. And a week will go by, maybe two.. as long as nMap doesn't show any real concerns that require immediate attention. Thus ending fun time.
So yeah, even the dumbest Internet surfing lazy admin could see you.

Hi Nihil,
I found the net meeting option in the root directory and when opened it asked for what directory server you want to use, what will I give? Is it ils.microsoft.com or anyother sever. As for the case of system administrator, the guys over there are not actually meant for doin something great for the firm they are there just for the sake of being a system admin. Actually, we dont have any rights to question them or rather ask anything relating to network. It is like all things in network are only meant for them. They just neglect our request regarding any questions of networking. Well, what should I say about them. They are good people, but sometimes they become so goood that even the nice people will think, I am not at all goood. So that is all about sysadmin. When I first went and asked for a rights in the sever, so that I can paste my personal files, they said, just wait, let me think of that. The only proccess that they need to do was to create a folder in my name, thats all, and for that particular reason they are lagging, why I am telling all these and when we relate the chat with this it is not like I want to explore their network rather I am pointing out their way of doing. I really love to do something interesting, interesting in the sense, not to intall anything without admin rights, but something for our team, which will allow us improve our way of doin.
I dont think anyone of you will like a lengthy thread.
Regards,
Williams Antony.
