Dumb user

sigh...ok, I have to admit about 3 weeks ago, I did a dumb user :eek:

I changed some settings on my wifi router for security purposes. I had some initial difficulty getting the router back up & running. After a few tweaks and a router reboot, I figured I was done.
Well, I was having major issues connecting to the internet. I tried every trick of the trade to no avail. So about 20 minutes later, the gf walks over and says..."how come the box that comcast gave us looks funny?"
In terms we understand "how come the lights are not showing an active internet connection on the modem?"

yeah. I never turned the damn thing back on after a modem reboot. :withstupi

and who hasn't done the old geek rite of passage and forgotten they put a capital letter in their password and spent a week unable to log on to their webspace/computer/cyberpet

I have never forgot to put a capitol letter in my pass but I did forget that there was a capitol letter in there and didnt figure it out for 3 days. I felt pretty stupid after that one happened.

EDIT: I remember one time a friend of mine was having alot of trouble remembering his windows pass so he came up with the solution of typing a it in a .doc file and saving it to his desktop. He said if he ever forgot his password he could just open the file and look it up...LOL

This is from this morning. I seem to get at least one each day.

Someone put in a help ticket about a dead mouse. I brought one down and they already had a USB trackball and a 3button PS2. Neither worked, but the trackball had a USB to PS2 converter on it. Why? Who knows, there are four USB ports that are sitting there empty.

So I get the trackball plugged in and working and say,

<me>"Okay looks like the PS2 port on the computer is bad"
<him>"Oh, so the mouse is bad?"
<me> "No, the port on the back of the PC is bad"
<him>"Wait a minute"

He goes to a cabinet and pulls out another PS2 mouse, plugs it in.

<me>"The port is bad on the computer"
<him>"Well could the trackball be cancelling out the others?"
<me>"No, this plugs into a USB port and the others go into the PS port, which is broken."

He stares at the trackball and then the other three mice.

<him>"So all these are broken?"
<me>"No, the port on the back of the PC is broken."
<him>"Well I don't want to use the trackball mouse"
<me>Okay, I can go see if there is a spare USB mouse around."
<him>"Great!"

Scoops up the other three mice

<him>"Can I keep these?!"

I walk off to shoot myself.

I do hope that you rebooted after connecting the new PS2 mouse? :D

I always carry a serial mouse for troubleshooting:

1. You can plug it in with the system running.
2. Default drivers will run it.
3. It will work in safe mode.
4. They are dirt cheap.

Yeah I did. It's an older PC, mass produced Dell and they are held together by duct tape right now. I actually had another box to replace this one, but the CPU fan died when I booted it up in the office, not kidding. So I just hunted down a spare USB mouse and he is happy.

I love optical usb mice. Because they don't need rebooting to plug them in and there is no ball for the little...."darlings" to steal.

The only downside with some older machines is they don't support USB in safe mode, or it's only the keyboard. That's why I carry the serial mouse.

Incidentally, you can always tell the quality of a rodent by the weight of its testicle :D

Also some of the quirks with the Dell PCs we have is that they will not normally have a problem recognizing PS2 mice, but sometimes(a lot actually) a USB mouse/keyboard will not be recognized unless it is plugged into the same USB port that a previous device was. Only on some models.
