How long till you adopt Vista?

I'm just going to use RC1 64 bit ultimate edition which I already have installed as a dual boot option. Eventually they'll stop supporting it, but at the moment it still gets updates etc and doesn't look a whole lot different to the final version.

I don't have a key for Vista which would activate the final copy, nor the money to justify paying for ultimate. I don't know whether it would be worth paying for Home Premium or whether for the moment I should just use what is working quite well. Either way I will not make it my main OS just yet.

3rd service pack...no sooner.

I've tested enough of M$'s OS's to know that rule.

Been involved in three different rollouts since September. All migrations
from W2K to XP. One a bank, another a hospital, and now a mfg'er I work
for fulltime. Nobody in these outfits talks of migrating to Vista. From
what I've seen, many companies won't be migrating to Vista until 2010.
Or later.

The desktop and server markets are maturing. I'm not sure it bodes well for Microsoft. Lucky for them, computer hardware is junk and doesn't last much more than a few years.

Well, MS have had a long time to work on this and they do seem to be getting better SP wise?.................6 for NT4, 4 for Win 2000 and 2 for XP. I would be prepared to give it a go after SP1.

A lot of people I have talked to over here are not thinking of migration until a major hardware upgrade is due. Given that this tends to be driven by our taxation rules, you would be looking at a 4~5 year cycle.

Well, if ones does any kind of support on the consumer side, like hex, we'll be seeing it soon enough. The only look I've had at Vista was on an old emachine I jazzed up w/ W2K and Office then donated to a non-profit. They got some guru/id10t who stuck one of the Vista betas on it. The director came to me afterwards and complained of the computer's slowness. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Vista running on a 466mhz Celeron with 128 mb's of ram.

Hey! the guy must have a twin brother...............I got a PIII/866 the other day with 64Mb of RAM and XP Pro SP2 on it. At first I thought the VDU was fubared because nothing happened for ages :D To make matters worse, it had onboard video!!!

The way I look at it, there will be some commercial work doing testing, as a lot of the smaller shops won't have the staff for that.

From the private customer point of view, it will start to ship early 2007 and will be covered by the manufacturer's warranty...............so I expect we will get SP1 before that runs out?

Yeah, I know of a couple of shops that went out of biz on XP and W2K.
They fared well in the 95/98 world, but couldn't pick up new skills fast
enough. I don't think troubleshooting Vista's going to be much different
than working on XP, but who knows?

XP on 64 mb's of ram? My nephew tried that once. S-l-o-w-e-r than s-l-o-w.

I find it strange that somehere could actually go out of business due to XP and W2k! To me, that sounds like a mickey mouse type of business in the first place. I agree that Vista isn't going to need a whole new set of skills if you're used to XP - it's a change, but not as radical as switching from 95/98 to XP.

I'm amazed that even booted :) specially as the RAM was megabits not megabytes according to your notation. :D Having said that, my old laptop ran XP with SP2 on 192MB RAM and a 750 mhz processor. It wasn't fast but it was acceptable enough not to make me install a different OS. That's actually the laptop I hope to put Ubuntu on tomorrow.

Heh, I used to run XP (with all the eye candy and tons of services disabled of course) on a PII350 with 64 MB of RAM and it ran absolutely fine. Better than when I installed 2000, in fact. For Vista, the only reason I want it is for DirectX 10, which won't be released for XP afaik? And that's going to have to wait till I get a new desktop, since all I have now is a laptop. That's going to be a few years down the line. So I don't see myself upgrading to Vista yet.

Yes, Vista will come with a whole new API, DirectX 10, which which won't incorporate older versions of the API, unlike previous versions. This means DirectX 10 won't run on XP and M$ are unlikely to provide any backwards compatible code to enable this. Critics say this is a marketing ploy to boost the sales of Vista, however the reality is that Vista has a totally new driver model to XP, so although it could be ported to suit the OS, the performance wouldn't be worth the effort involved.

You won't be able to run DirectX 10 games a Windows XP setup. The only two games I've heard of that are directly aimed at Vista (apart from a PC version of Halo 2), are Crysis and Alan Wake.

Yes Moira the UK has different accounting rules and tax regulations. We produce "statutory accounts" and a "tax return" which may say different things, but must be reconcilable.

In the USA your tax return is generally identical to your accounts so "tax concessions" are built into the accounts. This is why they use LIFO (last in first out) for inventory valuation, and "double declining balance" for amortization (depreciation;)) for example.

My problem with the Windows XP machine was partly that it had onboard video that was taking 16 megs of the 64 installed:eek:

The other thing is that it was a "default install", which really wants 128MB.

It is surprising how little resource XP will run on if you know what you are doing :D I would generally recommend 512MB of RAM or better for average home users, simply as a precautionary or pre-emptive measure.

I agree, I got XP slimmed down with XP lite and had it running on my laptop, which only had 192MB RAM of which 8MB were being used for onboard graphics. If you stop unnecessary services and start-up programs running it definitely does help.

I still don't know how you got it even booting on 64MB RAM though, especially as that was trimmed down to 48MB! :D

Yes, it took almost 10 minutes to boot :D .............that is why I thought the VDU was dead!

I added another 64MB to make 128MB and turned off unessential stuff and It at least behaved half-decently with standard office and browsing type stuff.

No point in trying games with that low video capability?

Depends on the games .... you might manage Solitaire :D
