I am gonna guess that this is a joke. I seriously doubt anyone that can find a chat room can be that ignorant.
However, I think that if it were real, then the newbie kinda got what he deserved. I mean, just because someone tells you to do something, doesn't mean you should go out and do it. You cannot trust everyone. If you say "My legs hurt" and someone says "Go jump off the Empire State building, and that will cure it" should you do it? No, you should find out what might happen if you jump off that building (splat!!)
He should have went to google and searched for "deltree". He should have said, "Ok, I'll try those things, logged out, and did some research. I sure as hell wouldn't just blindly trust someone in a chat room that I didn't know. But then again, I am a cynical guy that's been through 5 years of college ( not that college is really tough, but I learned MANY THINGS about trust...stupid sorority girls  ). Maybe he was some 12 year old that knew nothing.
Anyway, I think it's a prank.
erm, colleges have dorms wired and NIC cards have blinking lights.Quote:

The fact that there is no reverse DNS configured still supports the possibility of a real modem but I doubt it.
i can easily see this as some guy knowing a "friend" who told him that the light blinking ment he was getting hacked so he went to a chat to ask, and then this happened. i'm not saying that its definatly true, but i do know college people who are dumb enough to fall for something like this.
It was funny, I admit that. But yet, it was cruel. I agree with souleman, another script kiddie has been created. This stuff should be stopped, along with script kiddies.
Glad to hear this wasn't you NetSyn.
Round 1 through 4 I lmoa, but the last round, if it was for real, was pushing the j/k a bit far. But I don't believe it was for real. The the n00b had windows open it would have complained like hell about deleting files in use. I think he had caught on by that point and left 'cos he realised he wasn't going to get much help.
But in answer to the question - yes, there are some people who are this stupid.
I remember, many years ago now, selling a PC to a Lady (late 40's). I went round to her house and installed it for her to make sure she was OK and gave her an hours walk round of the PC. I even left 3 learn-2-use disks she could just drop in the CD and learn about windows/office. My last words to her on the way out of the door were: "Any problems, press F1 for help".
Maybe a week later I was passing and decided to stop by and see how she was getting on. I knocked at the door and she came out asking: "Where the hell have you been? I pressed F1 TWO DAYS ago!"
If this seems like an old gag to you, it is only because I have been telling this story for a decade and I have too have heard it told back to me in many variations. But this actually happened and it happend to me.
What do you mean stupid? This guy has a few questions and asks. Seems like the smart move to me. The only thing stupid is those guys taking him for a ride.
Just a short post, in the States many colleges and Universities have extensive modem pools, for remote access, of students, staff, faculity, and distant learning courses. They also support a host of other secure connect methods. Think about war dialin you had better come up with some pretty creative things cause they have defended against this since the late 80's. but it is typical for a dot edu to have a 192.xxx.xxx.x addy.
LMFAO!!!
ntsa
