A few days ago, there was this big fuss in India: a man died, and they burnt his body according to the ancient rites. No big deal, but there was someone else with him on the pyre: his wife. And no, she wasn't dead. She decided to follow her husband to "eternity". Indian police forces tried to stop the ritual, but were held back by the masses. A horrible death, indeed. But what amazed me most about that story is that the woman wasn't tied or anything. She was just laying there, undergoing horrible pains. She chose that over a life without her beloved one...
Her own choice... And she must have been determined, otherwise she couldn't have gone through that horrible pain. And her family? They were all very proud of her...
I read somewhere once (but I can't remember where) about how Western culture/ideology/religion has improved those of other countries/peoples. And in the case about India, that it was (but apparantly still is according to the news posted by Negative) the tradition that when the husband dies, the wife (even if she's still alive) would join the husband in the burning/cremation. Why?? It said that once the husband dies, the wife is worthless since no other men would marry her.
