you could try a little proggy called CD-R Diagnostic.
im not sure if its still being made, i have a really old version, but it still works.
i normally use it for ripping stuff of a cd that has become damaged, normally by sunlight or just use. it also seems to be able to rip data off CD's that haven't been burned properly. not coasters, only the ones that aren't so seriously wrecked.

Have a look at blindwrite:
http://www.blindwrite.com - a friend swears by it, but I dont know if it will help in your situation as I have no experience with this product. - but might be worth a try.

The cd protection that you all talk about getting around using the magic marker works by placing random junk on the outer track. The cd players do not play the cd, because they keep reading the random junk placed on the outer track. I dont remember why the players dont skip to the next track as it has been awhile since ive read up on the subject. What the marker does, is make that outer track of junk unreadable no matter what so the player skips it. Hopes this sheds some light on the subject.

Maybe try some virtual imaging software, i havent tried it yet but there is supposed to be a program that puts a virtual image of the disc, with the copywrite intact on your HD which then can be played from a virtual CD player you create with that prog. I read about it but I cant remember the name.....maybe someone out there can help you with that.
Good Luck
