General Wardriving Tutorial

So is it now okay to do a port scan of any body or company that you want?

Becuase obviously no one would ever use the information they get from that port scan in a bad or malicious way.

He wrote a tutorial on how to do something illegal. Not only should this thread be deleted, he should be banned, or at least warned about it.

If you now think it is okay to war drive, as long as you don't access those networks, is it now okay for script kiddies to port scan anyone they want, do a fingerprint on the results they get, determine what services and operating system(s) you are running, and learn of the current security holes and exploits that are possible on your box? Well they didn't do anything bad yet, so it's okay for them to do that then too. If you are agreeing with plastic, you minus well agree with this paragraph as well. Then where will this extend into the real world, will it now be okay to walk up and down streets and try to open peoples front doors to check if they are locked? "Well I wasn't going to steal anything, just seeing if there front door was locked when they left."

War driving only serves one purpose, to illegaly obtain net access by STEALING someone else's bandwith. Weather or not they know how to protect themselves, does not give you the right to steal from them. Or is it okay to steal candy from a baby because it doesn't know how to or cannot protect itself.

Two points
ONE: this is not illegal, basically there have been some rulings in court stateing that a company has to take reasonable steps to secure a wireless connection, if they don't it is assumed open for the public.

TWO: there are legit purposes for this, we use wardriveing to find rouge WAP's at our company (then some old school 'fox hunting' to find the device). Another use are the groups that map public (blatantly unsecured) WAP's in major cities. You can get maps of most major cities and hotspots in them so you can use the net outside.

Scanning is a fact of life. If you watch an internet-facing firewall you'll see tons of scans going on every minute. This will *never* go away.

While I agree that gaining illegal access to any network is a bad thing, plastic didn't post the thread and say, "Go out and steal bandwidth."

I think you are jumping to conclusions here. No one here said that they agree that it is ok to penetrate someone else's network.

Not true. War driving can be and is used to identify weaknesses in access points. We do it all the time to ensure that administrators have properly configured their access points. We also War drive to test signal strength from our towers.

WarDriving is fun.

PS. And yes I do portscan anyone I want. Its perfectly legal and I hope it always stays that way.

This is an incorect and infalmitory statment, a correct statment would be "Warrdriving has one major perpuse, to utilize the bandwitdth that companies are broadcasting on public air waves as a public service" as Long as you don't defeat any wep securtiy keys or spoof a mac address to connect you have done nothing wrong. If a company dosn't want you useing their resources they must either 1. not have any WAP's or 2. secure them.

Personally, The3ntropy, I think you need to have a little bit more of an open mind on things... and step aside from the one-sided view you have on this.

Seems there is alot of controversy with this one little tutorial. I can see why but we all need to have more open minds, and stop jumping down each others throats. All it does is burn bridges that could possibly be helpful in the future. Lets loosen up a little and enjoy the immense resources that this site and the people hear offer to everyone. Im not condoning putting illegal things up on this site im just saying that something that sounds like it could be illegal might not be. Just chill out a little and be more open. Some illegal stuff is necessary to know in the security world. Remember that.

I'd just like to inform you that my roommate has a full desktop in his car. Has for about 3 years now. I know several people who have seen it and liked it and followed his example. He's got a 400W (800W peak) power inverter under the passenger seat. Sitting infront of the stick leaning against he eq is an 8.4" touch screen, mounted sideways behind that is a keyboard. Sitting in the backseat in a homemade (cardboard) case is a 450Mhz system (which at one point was complete with a CD-RW). This system also has a NIC, so that a cable can be ran out the window in order to network the car, to update the software running it (custom written apps) and also for transfering MP3s and Movies onto the car. The audio output is wired into the car's stereo system (which is rather intimidating in itself). The first generation of his CarPC had a homemate 12V power supply. So trust me, don't be calling people who have desktops in their car dummies.


Now on to this big discussion that has arisen. First off, I just got my new network card, and I have plans to go War Driving as soon as the Uni and College get back up and running, to see what's floating around the residence. The cool thing about this is that I can even take the bandwidth while at the college and it's legal, since I'm paying 400 a year for access to that network. I think the tutorial is definately acceptable. Now most people should now how to war drive if they are interested in it because it isn't exactly rocket science but for a lot of people it will be a handy reference tool.

I think people forget what AO was originally about. I'm only currently registered (8 months ago now) but I used to float around from time to time. Anyways.. forget about that new logo up in the top corner of this page. Remember what the old one said? "Hackers know the weaknesses in your system. Shouldn't you?" If someone can go war driving and find a hole in your wireless network, then shouldn't you know how to do the same thing and find that weakness for yourself? That's what this site was designed for. People are so uptight about the legality of everything. If people don't find it here, they'll find it elsewhere anyways, and at least if it's here we know how to protect ourselves from it, or in thise case, how to test our systems and networks. I think we all need to relax and lay off people a little bit. This was a well written tutorial and deserves credit. If you've got a problem with knowing exactly what is out there and what is happening, I think you need a reality check. Welcome to the real world, this tutorial could save your wireless network from being cracked and access. You say this could be used for illegal purposes. I could post my next python tutorial and have it be entirely about sockets. Someone could come along and take that socket tutorial and use it to write an illegal program. Someone could post on securing against the RPC worm, but they will have to mention the work and how it works. That's illegal information, yet it's valuable for us to know. I suggest everyone just chills.

you can pop a full desktop in your car. Just get one of the DC/AC converters, wire it up, etc. I used to have a tv and a nintendo in my truck. :)
