I voted yes, because I had done some thinking about this in my past as well, and had reached the same conclusion. Evidently, both xmaddness and Scientific American agree with me. But, if any of you do find a way to travel back in time, please go back a few years and tell me. It [will/would have] save me a lot of headaches. :D

If I could travel in time, I wouldn't tell anyone about it. I'd just get the six numbers for the next powerball drawing! LOL

Of course we can travel in time. We are doing it at the moment. At the rate of 1 second per second.

Of course, what is really meant is can we change the rate of travel through time? I think that the answer has to be no, because to travel either way in time implies that "the past" and "the future" exist as distinct entities. I tend to take the view that the past exists on in that it is represented and reflected in the present, and the future is something we build. In other words, in terms of chronological time, the present is the only thing that exists, which contains the past within it, and all possible futures.

time is messured now by light. so is distance. but the two cancel each other out. for example, 1 second is how long it takes for light to travel x distance. and 1 meter is how far light travels in y time.

now, if one of them is out a little bit, wouldnt it snowball into one very large miscalculation?

I have traveled in time, one time I went to europe and on the way back I got back about the same time!!!!


Reality: I voted possibly because who knows what will be able to happen. Although, it seems hard to imagine going back intime. Because it is said that if a person would go back in history and move a thing as small as a fallen leaf in the forest, it would alter our earth. Although it would be awesome and I am optomistic I doubt it will happen in my lifetime.

I think a creature can become intelligent enough to think that there "could" be more to their place in space time and dimesion than they can percieve.

I'm here, hi, lets go.

There are several different manners of where you can 'time travel':

1. Hyperstrings: These exist in dimentions <4, and are believe to be formed during the early stages of the universe, and since they excide the space and time dimentions they are capable of travel faster then light.
2. Wormhole: Think two blackholes attached and bends outside of spacial dimentions to loop over to another section.
3. Speed: Pure speed will create a 'twins paradox' effect, where one ages faster then the other type of seneario. What happens, is because everything must remain relative to another your 4th dimention (time) will 'shrink', in accordance to Zeno's paradox (see google for more info... its a large math concept) you can have infinite spaces between two points, but between the two points is a finite size. When applied to 4th dimention, light outside of your time craft must apear as light moving at the speed of light, to do this your 4th diemntion will shrink and the theory of relativity lives.

Those are just some ways, another could be gravational warping etc... there are many many different ways to time travel.

Actualy part of you is moving back and forth in time; electrons in atoms move increadbly fast, this means they have an open path to travel backwards and forwards in time, this could mean that only 1 eletron exists but thats just some speculation there.

You must remember that anything done in the past will effect the future (see "chaos theory"), and I have a working theory that the future can effect the past/present... but thats a little off-base.

Agreed they move fast, but they do not move anywhere near light speed, let alone faster than light. I can't see how we could move backwards and farward in time. I have read all those theorys about extra dimentional travel, in fact it took me years to understand the concept of worm holes, and I don't mean just accepting a hole opening up between two locations in space time. But I cannot see a physical object with mass ever traveling those bounds. You would have to find some way to negate mass?

In physics one we studied something like einstein's theory of relativity which said that If you were to travel for a long period of time at a very high speed through space when you came back to earth it would be some time not too far in the future(actually it doesn't necessarily have to be through space). They did an experiment placing an atomic clock in a plane and flying it for long periods of time and found that when it came back the time was some fraction behind when it first left. I don't remember the actual formula but I know that this time change gets more significant the faster you travel, and is very significant traveling at the speed of light. I remember something like if you traveled to a star 10 light years away and back it would take twenty years but when you got back it would be like 21 years later or something like that. But with the technology we have right now it is not significant enough to notice.

isnt that what a black hole does? a colapsed star (black hole) has such a large gravitational pull, large enough to bend and "swallow" light. now, there is NO such other knows force greater than that.

one time a space probe was sent into a black hole. as it slowly drew into the back hole. its physical shape was changed. it became slender and longer (due to gravitational stress) however, unlike conventional gravity as we know it, the probe wasnt damaged in any way... as an example, imagine an egg being squeezed in your hand, you squeeze hard enough the egg would crack (conventional gravitaional stress)... but imagine you squeezing the egg, and instead of it breaking, it stretches and becomes more slender to accomidate your hand, becoming possibly, a finite shape without breakage. (blackhole gravity)

Perhaps time travel, even though i dont believe it is possible, is held in blackholes.

however, i DO believe that time is no barrier FOR travel. what i mean, is that we should be able to cover great distances in any amount of time. instantaneous travel so to speak. this of course means travelling at speeds greater than light. but as einstein said, nothing can ACCELERATE to the speed of light, (due to the stress that would be created), so back to black holes, as there is supposedly "no stress factor" would it be possible to accel to speeds greater than light once "inside" the black hole?

as a further note, i also think that a black hole is a wormhole, meaning that it is essentially a tunnel through space and will come out from another black hole elsewhere in the universe.
