Hrm... In Japan I had my Juicy 12mbit dl / 1mbit up ADSL connection... About a month after I got that they introduced 26mbit dl / 1mbit up. No I hear they have a 40mbit dl and 1mbit up. Man, living in Japan (Okinawa) was nice. Okinawa is connected to mainland Japan with some MAJOR fiber. I forgot exactly, but OC-192 (10gbit/s) if I remembered correctly...? :)
But now I'm in the United States, in Idaho. The University here has a 2gbit connection, so there is a bit running through here, and I got Wireless Internet since it rocks the butt off of everything else offered here. Not as nice as 12mbit down, but I do get more symetric speeds now! Usually around 4mbit up and down. BTW, this test I got lower than normal speeds. Check: http://www.dslreports.com/archive/fsr.net?s=3719&r=56 for my other tests
Service: Wireless (802.11)
Equipment: $250 + $250 extra equipment
Service: $500 a year or $55 month
Total this year: $1,000
Striek: That is some crazy stuff you do to squeeze the speed out of the line. While I was in Okinawa I had no problems pulling in up to about 8mbit/sec, though I had multiple TCP/IP sessions going on. It is impossible to get over 300kb/s between Japan and the US with the TCP/IP protocol simply because light doesn't travel fast enough to cut down latency enough. And this was coming out of 2 wires that were of dubious quality coming into the house and getting phone calls over those same 2 wires while downloading...
