Is it worth to install Firewall in home pc?

Catch:

1. Yes, many do address the normal user.
2. You are already pompous.... ;)
3. Yes there are a gazillion other sites.

But this site is a place to educate others. When you were a kid in third grade and you asked your teacher about a subject that was way out of your depth, lets say Einstein, the teacher didn't just respond with E=Mc^2 and leave you to it did she...... Nope, she put it in nice simple terms and carried on teaching you the long division she was teaching you because it was a building block that would lead to the understanding of your question when the other blocks had been put in place. Thus your answer to the question from the "third grader", (no offense to the person who started the thread), was akin to responding with "E=Mc^2". Sometimes you are a little like a M$ error message - absolutely correct but of little use to anyone but yourself..... ;)

It wouldn't have been pompous to say "Yep, I would recommend it until you get a bit more knowledgable and comfortable with your OS and then you could look into a higher level of security still by locking your box down yourself and running without one". See.... That wasn't so hard and for those who were closer to being able to do that they could have asked more questions. The "third grader" OTOH would recognize the advice and also recognize any ensuing conversation as being at a higher level. Result" everyone gets to pick what they need at the level they need it. As it is all that happened was the thread turned into a pi$$ing match......

I misunderstood the intent of this site.

I thought it was supposed to be a forum for security experts to converse and neophytes were welcome to watch and or ask questions if they wanted more knowledgeable answers than from a generic computer "How to" forum, really however they were more tolerated than pandered to.
Now you are telling me that this is third grade? ;)

I don't and won't give bad advice regardless of how uneducated a user is. I have at every turn made myself availible to any number of follow-up questions, but I think it is important for the person in question to have an idea of the global picture and that picture should be constantly work toward. You don't want to tell a third grader 3+4=9 in the process of taking them to reach E=mc^2, just like you don't want to tell people that misusing a firewall is the process to a secure system. It merely builds bad habbits.

This isn't a matter of lower level advice, it is a matter of right and wrong advice. I explained what firewalls are for and when they should be used, I tied that into why a firewall would be inappropriate for the situation at hand. I made myself availible to follow up questions.

The only reason a problem arose is because another self-proclaimed expert thought that I was just plain wrong, NOT too advanced.

The very idea of giving instructions to a person who has no chance of understanding them or following them makes anything you say bad advice. If you don't want to "pander" to newbies, don't post a complicated answer to a newbies question. Instead, point him/her in the direction of a nice tutorial or something.

I run a firewall on some of my machines. I prefer it as a mode of defense in the weird multiuser environment of my house. I already have the OS locked down, the firewall just gives me an added sense of control over the (l)users.

In short, people around here do find value in what I say, and I really don't care that newbies seeking a simple answer don't. I also really don't care that others of you don't agree with what I say or how I say it. Variety is the spice of life and you should respect and appreciate by the number of Antipoints that I have... some people actually gain something from what I say.
Perhaps the rest of you should just leave it at that.

In my work place, people don't argue with me. I deal almost exclusively with external clients who respect my opinions and appreciate the money I save them. )Here, some people like to learn, most just like treat me like I'm stupid just because it is a different approach from their own.)

While I appreciate your career advice, I assure you it isn't needed. I've already been doing this work for the better part of a decade with no issues.

I summed up by offering my conclusion based on my newbie status.
I was attempting to express opinions and share experience on my user level.....sometimes we newbies need to figure stuff amongst ourselves....think of it as another form of google.
If this post is so far beneath you....then don't answer it. If your willing to share your experience and opinions, then do so......but don't get your hackles all up when somebody else see's it another way or lacks a foundation of knowledge equal to yours.

In short, taking the time to post try and post is my way of learning and trying to help others at the same time....sometimes I even do research to try and find an answer or related information for a post....I never claim to be an expert. I do care that people don't agree with me, there must be a reason why.......that's kinda what I use as a foundation for discussion.

Not trying to be a smarta** here, or fling myself into a flame war.....
just need to vent, I was very careful in my post about expressing my opinion on the topic rather then offer advice I'm not qualified to give.....to have it torn apart without even being acknowledged as valid kinda irritated me and I needed to vent.

I don't, I merely didn't care for the fact that another user dragged a tiff from a different thread to this one and said to ignore me.

After that I merely express an irritability about people without basic IS security knowledge arguing with me... after which I get hassled about not recognizing the newbies... I recognized the newbies, they dismissed (stated to ignore) me.

So why attack me? Because I merely stated that a few more (at the very least) CISSP type (having the letters or not is irrelevant) people around, people that actually have a valid understanding of computer security and not just "pop" security. I don't see anything wrong with that statement, I don't see how it is insulting to anyone in particular and anyone who took it as such might want to think about that.

Newbies figuring things out for themselves is a bad thing, all they ever do is remake the same mistakes that others have made and no progress happens. Hell, most software products (especially those lacking direction like small commercial products and open source) are just revisiting the same problems that were first encountered and resolved 20 to 30 years ago... and where does that get anyone?
