Of course it doesn't work. Antipoints don't work. They really aren't an accurate measure of aptitude anyways. All you can do is call people on being idiots, post decent works and keep at it. Who cares about a colored square on some website anyways? Does it keep people up at night? If people are that concerned with them, watch a windows 98 defrag in advanced mode..there are lots of colored squares to see there.Quote:

I think that was because of the attitude of people here and their willingness to voice it rather than the AP system itself. When "peer pressure" is applyed, some follow with it.Quote:

And that's just a single example (not a typical situation IMHO). There are many others who get "toasted" and who I suspect don't come back.

Unfortunately, I can't beat anyone into submission with AP's unless they care about their own acceptability. That's a fact of life.... Another one is that people nowadays don't give a rats ass about acceptibility to the crowd, (me included). I do, however, care about presenting a good impression of myself as a human being.... But if I find myself in a crowd that doesn't like reasonable human beings then screw them..... They are more than likely the worthless kind anyway...

Isn't that a question of the "values" of the site?.... Do you care if wasters never come back. As long as they are a waster then why do you want them back? Doesn't JupM desire the quality poster over the troublemaker? One would think so if they intend to make a profit off the site from a security POV.
What else are AP's than "peer pressure". Mem is actually an example of when you get beaten enough with the AP stick but you still desire a place here they work. If others leave then they really didn't desire a "place" here, did they?

Are they an accurate reflection of "aptitude"? Of course not, but if the aptitude isn't "shining through" what is the point of reading the posts? Your argument is akin to saying "well, he's a doctor of philosophy, but he blows people up for a living.... so it's ok". If they deliberately hide their "aptitude" behind a facade of rudeness, irrelevance, illiteracy and indecency then what is the point of keeping them around????
You have no idea how fascinating I still find watching a defrag in advanced mode..... I can watch it for ages.... It's so frigging cool..... I guess I'm a geek..... ;)

Tiger: In a word, no. They don't work. There are senseless amounts of flame wars, and no amount of negative antipoints will cure that. When banned, people come back under different names and do the same thing. Eventually they tire of it, but they would probably tire of it before long anyways.
The point of the aptitude comment is akin to say ebay. If someone is a good buyer/seller they get a good rating if they aren't, then they get a bad rating. I understand the value of a rating system, and in most cases it works. However the antipoint system itself has failed. Here, we have lame-o alliances and people getting antipoints because someone agrees with what someone else said. I could say "the sky is blue" and get positive antipoints for it. Does that relate my knowledge of security or aptitude? no it doesn't, but people get these ratings that they perhaps did absolutely nothing to earn. Fact is they don't get rid of the garbage here. They tend to cause more garbage. How many times have you seen people complaining that they got "negged" or this or that about someone giving them antipoints. The whole peer banning thing has gotten out of control. It could have its uses, but in the current iteration it's more of a problem than a solution.
My AOL coaster set is almost complete. I am missing #564 and #957. Do you have those?
How else would I have known about all the colored sqaures in a defrag if I didn't watch it myself? /me is a geek too.
Well, I haven't been here to long nor have I been a good member (as in posting good/meaningfull posts). I got my post count due to my NST (which btw is good that is now gone). Now even though I don't visit the site as much, when I do I try to only post things that can help other people and post meaningful things. If there was an option I would love to reset my account and start from 0 posts.
Reading JPs post has insipired me to make more meaningful posts and visit more often now, that is, when I have time because I can't visit a lot because of school and well...life..
Improving this site depends on the members as much as it does on the owners (now JM) so we as the members have to do our part in making this site what it once was even though I wasn't there to see it but I would like to see it.
