muert0 - Thanks.
And thanks to all those who posted. I believe I have enough information to get started.
poo got banned in this thread????
I dont get it that got always has great info and I dont see anything out of line here what happened?
He got pissed and threw his computer across the room then he decided to leave AO. You've been here for over a year now, you should know by now that when someone gets banned out of the blue there are usually three threads dedicated to the subject. "Why are you posting this here" would have been a better question on this page.
Soma56, question... what will you gain from this? From the sound of things, you just want to play a game of root-wars. When I went to Interz0ne 3 and they had IIS servers setup and ready to go. Every fother mucker in the room was useing an old exploit which came out that April, this of course came out about a week before the con started. Five months later this was also used to help trojan a few webpages with scob. It was in the news. Download, compile, then run. Ahhh... fun, but what else have we learned?
But I am just saying the above to say this... in your own words, in relation to, "trying out scanners and tools" will it REALLY teach you anything? (Example) The chances of you actually learning about stack overflows or the even the software you are exploiting for that matter is slim and none.
Your right. Maybe I should quit now. Drop out of school and forget about the next six years studying computers. I don't think so.Quote:

The only limits I have are the ones that I create in my mind, however, I do appreciate your concern. Regards.
Poo asked for his account to be banned because of being flamed to much for his opinions, which in my views. From the correspondance I've had with him it does not sound as if he will be returning soon, if ever. AntiOnline has lost a good productive member with his leaving and while perhaps sometimes he stated his views too strongly for some, he caused far more good than harm. I for one will miss him.Quote:

Start a petition to get Pooh back here please ............. get him to change his mind, xierox ........... his mind rocks, big time. for people like him, what was that old english saying about brilliant minds and violent opposition? I think its a huge m/f*king loss.
Soma56, Welcome.
:)
U know the whole thing about the sum of its parts is greater than the whole?! Here it is so, everything else is commentary .... Learn the OS, monolithic or compartmentalised. Hey read djikstra's shortest path algorithim, read his postulations ....... great mind ....... if ever, perhaps the last of a breed ..... maybe that is gunther hornisch at cisco systems ........ perhaps you do not need to learn to code, but knowing how overflows and underlows and injections occur, how to circumvent or at least arrest them etc ....... also, reading is good<----- understatement if any, but stay focused on what you wish to achieve, is it just to use tools, being a skiddie, you learn something, yes you do, hey, like can i press this button.<------- here i agree with the specialist's earlier ascertions about what do you wish to learn, or do you want to be good at what you do, learning to understand and take apart to put back together, nothing, not even the manual can tell you everything......
but hey, me posting here may be a bad thing, why, cause i recently took my motor apart, i had a bearing knock, had the block schemed etc, when the engine was back in its bay, i found that i had nuts and bolts left, maybe they were just put in as red herrings, maybe they were needed. who knows, the car goes, tis all good !!!!!!!!!!!!!! hey ..................... i am in IT, if the nerds could do it (i think revenge of the nerds?!), so can i, enuff said !!!
I just read through the thread and i found it interesting. It gave me a good idea of how to start learning about network security which altough i have little knowledge of, i find interesting and would gladly pursue further when i finish my IT course and move on to university.
In fact, all the threads i have looked at or started so far have been more than useful and much respect goes to all AO family. Shame about Pooh, but from what i can see it was a case of people getting to involved, chill out a bit mate! dont sweat the small stuff!
Anyways, i found this thread useful and i guess 'soma'da other people who read it (lol) found it useful too.
Message to IT wizards out there, when u help us noobs out dont get to obsessed with being right all the time, and have some manners if you dis-agree with something someone says.
;)
I tend to agree, it seems that we ask some pretty off the wall questions sometimes.
I mean I just spent three days trying to complete a linux install without the redhat, suse, or mandrake installer... Not even ASP linux. I tried gentoo... for me this was an accomplishment to even get it to boot, but I leraned that there are things that you must do if you want it to do what you tell it too. I am far from an expert, and very inexperienced when it comes to linux, but as I have stated, I have the will to succeed, and the desire to learn.
I will do the gentoo thing again in teh near future, but I had a ton of wrk to do for my College courses, so I figured I better just get something on it I can use, and worry about the other stuff later. I still have my XP machine to fall back on, but I am trying to get away from MS.
I will not bash them, as I have seen in other threads... If I had the ability to build a 50 billion dollar rainy day fund, I would do it too. I might have pursued the business angles a bit differently, but Your damn tootin I would do it. Money is what obviously makes this world go around...
Still I continue to plug away, making my way through the journals here at AO
Take care...
Hmmmm.... guess I did not say much of anything....sorry
Pooh, you're missed.
Back in the days when I was in school learning networking we had an instructor who, in complete disregard for school policies, openly encouraged the class to work together to root out the school's network. We had all day to accomplish the task, singly or in groups. Once in, we were to damage nothing, but instead print something from this same instructor's personal files (he had a target .txt file just for that purpose).
The schools sysadmin was warned in advance of when the wargaming was to commence, and was instructed to do everything in his power to stop us.
The sky was the limit for either side and the attacks could come from outside the classroom.
After a successful entry, the team of students was debriefed, in both the presence of the instructor and the Admin, and their method was used to help the school tighten its security. Since this method's inception about 7 years ago, only 4 times have students succeeded. These successful students were awarded an extra test score of 100 into their grades. The team that most comes to mind is the one that infiltrated one of the server closets on campus and took the net that way. The poor IT guys were in fits trying to figure out where the attacks were coming from, thinking someone was using that server as a proxy.
Everyone benefitted, nobody got hurt - there *is* such a thing as ethical hacking, and it *does* help when properly utilized. I really like MSMittens suggestion of a 'wargames' night with friends, and I'm thinking quite seriously about setting one up in my area, just to find out how much more I don't know ;)
