I have a question: I thought that most universities were required to maintain the privacy of the students that attend the university (I say this without knowing where you are exactly). Aren't you opening up a security risk by allowing "brillance" to continue to use the laptop and potentially allow student grades to transmit in the clear (from your description of him it sounds like he wouldn't understand this concept)? And if that is the case, then doesn't a student have a reason to sue the university?

Eh.. we can work in tandem, spreading it out. Personally, I find it rather shocking that a university level admin would be so slack about his admin duties. Most of the real good ones I know are rather tight about it, particularly with users that haven't any "clue-by-fours".

Yeh, from stories I'v heard, university admins know how to do their job much better then high school admins.

And there is a certain amount of concern I would have given that in today's security world we really need more a perimeter-less security environment as well as defined procedures. Can we not talk about those effectively without it becoming a "trolling" experience?

Boss: His files weren't being backed up. The university needs those files. What happens if his HD failed?

Loser: He's backing them up to his own CD because IT "suck" according to him.

Loser: The guy was a smartass... he thought he knew better than IT and I can't force him to allow me to fix his personal computer.

yup. entirely possible - thats why you always CYA (cover your ass) with emails. if your boss is aware of what is going on - and he/she says "fine" - thats all you can do. it's your bosses job to deal or not to deal with the other persons boss on the issue - not yours!
