I stayed away from this topic because I am not in the “ Computer” security field as a profession, which is what I believe the topic was started about. Posts ( and alcohol ) have caused me to post.
Well, many have said much, but HTRegz said it in summary, including the sarcasm, why many entered, including joining AO.
Although I can’t speak for HTRegz why the sarcasm, I have found it both helpful and necessary throughout the years, especially when speaking with Geeks, and especially speaking with those involved in security ( Geeks use it to discover who understands them, people in security use it to break the monotony. ) This is a developed trait and can not be imitated.
Most here will not remember nor were even born when I first became interested in computers, though I did not make it my profession. They can but imagine what I did which would be considered nowadays as “ hacking,” ( or more specifically for some “ cracking, )” but was then simply a means to an end, and not something that would be considered in any way in violation of any laws, nor back then would it even get me kicked out of school. Unlike today, it was accepted because no one knew better, not the schools, not the Admins, and especially not the Courts. This is not the case now, nor has it been for some time.
That being said, I am unlike many here in that, when I was a mere child I learned I could not do anything “wrong” because I am one of those people that always get caught. As I grew through adolescence then through adulthood ( I am sometimes told I am back in adolescence ) I learned from prior experiences and expanded on my experiences to protecting those who could not protect themselves. This eventually carried me to where I am today.
Continuing involvement with computers was a wish to educate my children. I believed they would need these skills to excel in their future. But the passion for me is still there.
Although I do not tolerate those who break the law, I can understand ( within reason, given the drastically changing nature of computers and the law ) why some started on the “ dark side”, although I have been fighting this for many years now.
Just to take this a little further ( because I believe the meaning of the thread is intended ):Quote:

Just as prior hackers have been in the past accepted into the industry, Incompetent Adims which have been a bane to society and the computer industry as a whole, were accepted into the industry because of the spectacular growth of the industry; they have infiltrated at alarming numbers by filling positions crated which could be filled no other way. With some exceptions, they have been a bane to society and the computer industry as a whole.
Although I am not that naive to the fact they these incompetents still exist and some will persist in perpetuity, I believe it is not just the laws that will define the future realm, but the Computer community in general. And as already implied, incompetent Adims will not be accepted nor the manager who allows the incompetent Admin to stay in their position.
As I said, times have changed, very drastically in the computer industry. Those who have grown up from the past and realized there is no future in “ cracking”, if they are talented enough, may be able to make a decent living. But, in the future I believe that those just beginning to learn about computers now or in the very recent past will be held to a much higher standard then those of the 80's or 90's.
Just thoughts of a drunken old fool, and don’t take this to criticize others who have posted. It is just the way I see the future.

Last year about a week before summer vacation my freind suggested getting a job with the tech department at my school over the summer. I went to my interveiw at 8am and at 12pm the same day I got a call saying I got the job. Most of the time it wasnt really technical work, mostly hooking up computers, WAPs and splicers for network jacks at the new school that was being built. This job lasted for about 2/3rds of the summer. After it ended I was jobless for about a week, then I recived a call about subbing in for one of my freinds that was leaving on vacation. The majority of this job was spent running about 6000 feet of network cable over a 30 foot distance, and making the room we were running it to look nice. After this job was over, I wanted to do more during the school year. Unfortunatly there was no money for a 3rd STSS(Student Technology Support Specialist) so I asked if I could volunteer. This was fine with the administrator, so I was a volunteer for about 6 months. Then one of my co-workers got in trouble with his parents and had to take a leave of absence. So, lucky me, I got to fill in for him while he was gone, and I also recieved his paycheck. He has recently come back, and I am back to volunteering. Before my freind made that suggestion last summer, I was into computers already. But now I have a much better understanding of them, especially the security aspect, because we have to deal with security issues every day. So the reason im into security is due to necessity more than anything.
Computers always caught my attention, i always wanted to know what makes them tick. i thinks security is what one would consider, a great explortion/adventure. theres so much to learn and so little time. i think its the ultimate way to know how and what makes the world of Information Technology tick. To my understanding, to be a security expert, u have to be a jack of all trades in the IT world.

1) My modeling career never took off
2) Arnold said I couldn't double for him anymore - but I could still double for Sty Salone (that's Sly's his real name - just ask "the Chucker").
3) However, the truth is: After I spent a year and a half learning to be a German speaking code breaker and I got over to Germany, the Wall came down six months later, they wouldn't send me to learn Russian unless I signed up for five more years. So I'm sitting in the field, out in the rain, guarding a rock, when a warrant officer says "Hey, get over here and print off this report for me." I says, "Sir, it would give me no bigger pleasure than to print a report from a computer than you are standing right next to and could print it off yourself faster than it would take me to walk over there, however, my skillz are for naught and I can put a round through fleas arsch from 300 meters - Sir!" He says "Well dumbarsch - get your f*ing arsch over here and I will f*ing instruct your dumbarsch... ya jackarsch!" Soes, I goes and starts to learn - not realizing what it would lead to and how much I still have to learn and keep up with. Hey Mr. Warrant Officer - yea the one who first taught me about computers - DOS and Sun OS (and knife fighting (remember that "making scambled eggs" technique you showed me?), explosives, rapelling, and pressure point fighting) - THANKS!
People - let me tell you - between IT security and auditing, I would not give this line of work up for the world - it is simply awesome! :cool:

And I see alot of you talking about being "destructive" but this would imply that you've actually done something, most of you have not. "l33t h4x0r" this and that... the sad truth is most people like that will never do anything even remotely cool or original with a computer if it happends its like little kids and sex... no matter how they brag the chances are that nothing ever happend, if anything went on it happend to someone else ten times cooler than they could ever be.
