I am w/ nihil on this one. Although the government is obviously not unbiased and has its own special interest (especially the current one) at least it has to answer to the people (to some degree)
What makes you think that you can trust any corporation to behave any more ethically then the government?
Corporations have competition.
Seems to me that it has taken the combined efforts of the Governments of the USA and Europe to get Mr. William Gates III to even consider that concept :DQuote:

I am not a great fan of government, looking on them as a neccessary evil at best. However this seems to me to be a good time for the little toads to earn their "brown envelopes" :p
I find XT3000's examples very interesting, as they are based on cable, which is easy to manage by comparison.
I really would like some technical input here..............It all seems to be an issue of distance and interference?
Now, I guess the distance to a "beer bottle" has to be about 300 yards or less?
What about your indoor Wifi of about 3 yards or maybe 30 with bluetooth?
Could the solution be a WiFi to cable node..........that would reduce the transmission/reception radii?

All I can sense at the moment is another one of those VHS v's Betamax situations?
We could easily lose a valuable asset.............or is WiFi a valuable asset?

You wanna see competition, check out pizzerias and chineese fast food in any big city.

The issue here is not interferance.(Radio technology has advanced beyond bandwidth limitations) It is security, in it's purest form, privacy.
Currently we all connect to the internet via an ISP. All though regulated by the governments of our countries. ISP's are independant and there is very little those governments can do to regulate what we get up to. However if we are all connecting to the internet via State or local government sponsered WIFI Hotspots, the scope for censorship is increased.
This pretty much sums up the issues......
