what is BETTER or MORE ENTERTAINING about doom then DOOM 3 OR SOCOM OR HL2 BF
the only reason you guys are insisting on this point is cause you are trying to pay respect to the "classic" that doom is... when it came out doom got 95% score ...do you really think it would get theat today???

never really got into the whole Doom thing - started of with Quake and just stuck with it :)
never got as fanatical about it as trying to do whole thing in under Xmins or anything, would just fire it up and have a blast whenever had a spare minute
And yeah just the killing is good enough for me.
But I'll give Doom the props for getting the whole killing thing going, although I believe Wolfenstein came first, right? anyone?

Wolfenstein was the very first FPS for PC yes. Doom raised the bar. Those pussy games others are naming of wouldn't exist if Doom hadn't been made and made PC gaming something for mroe than nerds.

I have Wolfenstein (original) AFAIK it was the first real first person shooter. I also have Descent1 which was the first flight simulation first person shooter? I also have "Missile Master" that I still fire up now and then (now that is an old arcade game, although I believe that it was originally written for DOS?
I have Descent the Great War, and the one that came after it, and the next version of the original Descent. I am not a games player...............stuff is either given to me, comes with a video card (Soldier of Fortune, Serious Sam etc) or I buy from the bargain bin.
They can actually be quite good for practical testing of video performance, particularly if you know that is the sort of home that they are going to :D
I have a few CDs with old games on them you get several hundered for about $3 over here, but you need an old machine to play them. Windows 98SE is the OS that I recommend. Now even if they amuse you for 10 minutes each, that is way cheaper than the cinema and a burger?
The ultimate game is, of course "Space Bastards" which is a sort of adult joke game that makes fun of the old platform games..........you can be Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery (James Bond) Jean Claude Van Damme, or some American guy with a chainsaw..........it is really very funny............they made good Christmas presents about 8 years ago. Now that is a typical case of what some people seem to be saying here............it is the CONTENT rather than the bells, whistles and flashing lights that matter when it comes to amusement?
As for books, well, people who read recreational material will tell you that it is your brain that is the video card and it is a damn finer piece of work that anything from ATI or nVidia.........at least in my case it is ;) Anyway, how many times have you heard someone say about a film "it wasn't as good as the book"????????????

I am not saying that old games are better or new games are better..............what I am saying is that their job is to amuse, so there must be room for both?

I think that the car analogy works wonders.. My roommate went out and bought a 1992 Honda Prelude... Why?? He didn't want the newer 5th gen cars (1997-2001(2))... he liked the look of the 4th gen cars... It isn't unique.. but he liked it.
Things don't have to be the latest and greatest to be the best... You have to get that through your head... because to be honest, I don't think you're meant for this site if you think newer is always better....

what the **** does any ****ing game have to do w/ any security issues. why don't YOU run a 1993 software in your network. just make sure you buy DOS 6.22 instead of 6.2

Unhappy: you're right... you're not a 13 year old girl... but you still haven't grasped the actual concepted of entertainment value... entertainment value isn't some fixed number like a price tag or the speed of your CPU.... It's not like Doom has an entertainment value of 1 and SOCOM has an entertainment value of 150... Tastes vary... just like with everything else... Titanic and Sleepover may have had entertainment value you to.... to me they didn't.. I find it much more entertaining to watch Dodgeball or Anchorman.... You need to take a look into quantitative and qualitative and the difference between the words..
You have to realize that that should read "I would like gore to play what I would consider to be a more entertaining game"... If you haven't realized it, you're 25 years old... you may be a couple of years older than me... but you don't know everything... so knock off the damn cocky attitude about something that you are obviously wrong about... It all comes down to a single sentence. We find Doom entertaining. That's all that matters, your opinions in the matter don't even count after that point.

Gore have you picked up and or tried Heretic or Hexen... I was always a big Heretic fan.... it might be more up your ally, it has more gothic undertones than doom.
