I don't get why so many people TRY and TRY HARD to stir up the pot. There are thousands of things to write research papers on and when this person was given instructions about how to write the paper she completely ignored them.

What kind of signal would it give that student if the professor turned around and gave her an A? You can do what you want regardless of what I as you professor tell you about the assignment? Would this work at a job? If my boss tells me to go out and get a Windows 2000 server and get it installed on the network, and I take it on my own to put Redhat on it instead cause I feel this is a better route to take. The professor is the one grading the assignment and is the one giving the assignment, so he/she should have 100% control over what is allowed. Its not like the student wasn't told. If the professor had just recieved the paper and failed it for those reasons without priorly telling the student not to do it that would be completely wrong, but in this case the student knew better and took it upon themselves to start trouble.

Whilst I have expressed reservations about motivations and undercurrents I still maintain that:

1. This junior teacher (he is NOT a PROFESSOR.....his boss is an assistant professor) has a big chip on his shoulder and thinks he can take it into work with him.

2. He accepts a paper concept but tries to make restrictions that are totally contrary to the rules of the subject he is trying to teach, and are in flagrant violation of the rules of his college, and, therefore, his contract of employment.

3. He marks to his prejudice not the quality of the paper, and the subject he is supposed to teach.

4. He may well have violated the US constitution in the process, and has certainly compromised his employers legally.

5. Those who say that "teacher makes the rules" and "teacher is always right" probably have brown tongues and will probably go far in life, but with no satisfaction or real achievement. They are life's knob jockeys.

6. The lady was given a choice of a "persuasive" or a "research" paper. THIS IS AN ENGLISH COURSE; IT IS ABOUT STYLE AND PRESENTATION, in the English language? Now, she chose a "research" paper, so it must have contained quotations. Those people would have written "God" (capitalised), so if she then uses lower case the paper would look ridiculous? And you must not quote incorrectly? Also a research paper has a bibliography, which would contain a capitalised "God"

I would like to point out to you guys that on the 4th. July you will celebrate something...........what? if you think that this bullcrap is acceptable? all those fine people will have died in vain?

Because they did not say "professor is always right"

Here is an extract from that particular school Board's (VCC) rules:

I would agree with you on this IF the student wasn't given guidance on how to proceed with the paper. The way you're taking this would mean if you were in a computer class and the assignment was to write about the differences between CISC and RISC processors and the student turns in a paper about how god (or God) is the supreme being and thus the differences don't matter, that it would be wrong for the professor to fail him. The student has to abide by the guidelines the professor gives them or there is no order.

What is the student had written a paper saying that all Christians are stupid? Maybe saying that they're damning themselves. This could be construed as religious harassment.

I love how one second people are fighting to get the 10 commandments taken out of the lobby of a courthouse, and then in the next breathe fighting because a professor disallowed a religious paper.

The student would have then received a passing grade with extra credit for insight.

The RISC/CISC analogy wouldn't apply unless the teacher told the student that the subject was ok only if they left out a core component like the fact the reduced instruction set computers require less commands to complete a task. And when the student uses the word Reduced they fail regardless of the context of the rest of the paper had they not used the word RISC.

The irony I find is the defenders of the teacher profess a profound need for discipline and order in the classroom while on the other hand debating that "order" when it comes to measurement of student achievement. While one could argue the need for technical accuracy in a research paper about RISC computers, this is not the case in this English class situation. Heck most word processors with correct the lower G anyway so I don't get it. Is God on the politically correct hate newspeak list now?

You cannot expect to instruct a student to perform a task contrary to your contract of employment and expect to keep your job?

Discipline applies throughout the service............generals and admirals can face a court martial? so can scabby little low grade teachers?

Remember that in any military service it is not required that any member obey an ILLEGAL order............you can actually shoot the bastard who gives it if they insist:D So why should some provincial college be any different? (apart from the field execution bit?)

Sorry I do not have precise references to our or your military manuals, to hand, but trust me, it is true.
