I don't get why so many people TRY and TRY HARD to stir up the pot. There are thousands of things to write research papers on and when this person was given instructions about how to write the paper she completely ignored them.
What kind of signal would it give that student if the professor turned around and gave her an A? You can do what you want regardless of what I as you professor tell you about the assignment? Would this work at a job? If my boss tells me to go out and get a Windows 2000 server and get it installed on the network, and I take it on my own to put Redhat on it instead cause I feel this is a better route to take. The professor is the one grading the assignment and is the one giving the assignment, so he/she should have 100% control over what is allowed. Its not like the student wasn't told. If the professor had just recieved the paper and failed it for those reasons without priorly telling the student not to do it that would be completely wrong, but in this case the student knew better and took it upon themselves to start trouble.
