Microsoft not using Windows much on critical tasks.

yes I know you said you didn't know me well enough to call me a zealot or not. I was simply clarifying my thoughts on if I was a zealot :D

I bash MS on a daily basis at work... but I also bash the other OS's too. Hell I bash myself from time to time. I'm an equal opportunity basher.

Don't take anything I have said as an attack. I was, and still am, honestly curious as to your anti MS stance that I see a lot. This is not a bash, as everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. If people are being negged because they are expressing an anti-MS or anti-*nix opinion, well, then perhaps someone needs to open their minds a little and see the bigger picture out there.

Why are people so zealous about operating systems? seem sort of weird to me.............hell I would say VMS, but a lot of youngsters today seem to think that there is this Linux v Windows "thing" going on...........

They have never even heard of VMS?

Then you get the Apple afficionados with their MAC OSes................?

I honestly don't see it myself.............a computer is only a tool after all?

I really find it difficult to get that excited about :D

If a linux distro has anything even REMOTELY as powerful as WSUS I am not aware of it at all. You have to understand exactly what you can do with WSUS inside your network.

It is AFAIK, and you can even get open source VMS..............this is an OS where it is irrelevant to discuss downtime (other than planned) in terms of a year.......it would have to be several years :)

Sure, I will have a go at MS and quite a few others over business practices, but apart from that, what does it matter?

But let me tell you what it does. It keeps a SQL database of every tiny little patch ms ever puts out. You go into active directory and tell your computers to activate automatic update and where to look for it without ever touching the client. Then you install WSUS and tell it to contact MS for a sync. As the client computers contact WSUS and report their status they appear in a drop down list. Then you can set categories of computers by drag and drop. For instance my core group of servers are in their own group along with problem users. More on that later. So today MS releases a critical patch lets say for XP and 2000. I sync with MS and the patch gets loaded and in a few seconds I get a report on which PCs have it and which do not. Also in the pane is a COMPLETE overview of the patch what is effected and if a reboot is required or not. So I can make the decision. Lets say this is a patch that can be easily contracted via a web site that would not be on my block list or too vague to tell which sites are infected. And it requires a reboot.

I can immediately push the patch to Clients on the **** list and force their PC to reboot even if they are working on it. Or I can give them a 5 minute warning and reboot. Or I can detect if they are logged in reboot it immediately or wait until they log in and give them 10 minutes for work or 30 before rebooting. Since it is critical I can weigh the risk of infection against the risk of someone losing a document they may be working on. But for servers that is a different matter. Since I place some in the core I can set the client to flag the patch for any administrator logged in and let them make the decision or deploy the patch in the middle of the night or again after and administrator logs in. In any scenario the machine is completely controllable from the remote WSUS console. I could deploy the patch in 10 minutes force reboot ALL machines and report patch status if I wanted too. Speaking of patch status with the flick of the mouse I can have detailed reports of all patches in various categories and develop a daily and even hourly strategy across the enterprise. And believe it or not there is more but my hand hurts from typing so I am getting some coffee. Oh I can also over-ride settings if an administrator is logged in anywhere so their activitiy is not disrupted. All from a single PC. Sure this takes a lot of work to set up and integrate but it is worth it and makes MS an ATTRACTIVE business platform in this regard.

/EDIT almost forgot the best part it is F R E E. And it all adjusts to the speed of network background and user consumption.
