Can someone tell me what this has to do with Newbie Security?

And second why are you guys acting like 5 year olds? The guy asked for imformation. So do the normal ban him and let it go. To contact the guys school is not only stupid on your part is downright wrong.

Yea... I am waiting for the outpoor of "This is a security site" But, come on the guy obviously has no idea what the hell he was doing. And even though. There is no way to actually track it back to the actual guy because most schools are behind a router. So you don't have his actual IP and if more than one person at the school comes to this site. You have effectively just ****ed an innocent person.

Do any of you actually think before you jump on your high horse (no pun intended) and start to pass out justice?

Don't you think that we are responsible for letting a potential target know what's going on? To be honest, I really don't feel someone who is soliciting others to commit a criminal act to aid him in cheating on an exam is a victim in this situation.

No... Because the guy is an idiot. That is like telling the police someone is going to try to rob a bank with a coat hanger. The guy is obviously not qualified to do anything. And his simple way of looking for this info is wrong. He isn't even smart enough to realize that the info he is looking for is probably on an individual teachers account which makes this a bit more difficult. The guy has absolutely no idea what is going on... Or no way to accomplish it.

So telling the potential target doesn't help anything. The attack will probably never happen. And fortunately asking for help isn't illegal. But, if his school gets word of him thinking about attacking he is screwed. Because in the AUP they say that using the internet is a privilege and can be taken away for any reason. Even though he has not actually broken any rules.

The only reason this pisses me off is because I have absolutely no intention to get in trouble for hacking talking about hacking or jackshit close to it. I know what I know because I spent my time doing and am done. Everything I know now I use for fun with playing games on friends on just messing around or learning more. But, I was accused of "conspiring" with a hacker for talking to a friend. I almost got my **** taken simply because I was talking to someone. I honestly think my school was trying to sniff. <Smiles for encryption>

Anyway back to my point... The guy is dumb... Everyone knows that. So leave it be... He will never get anything accomplished. He will never come close to hacking his school. And worst of all. He doesn't even know where to start looking for someone to hire. So let him die in shame on the site and drop it.

While I was in class one day I was talking to TheHorse over Gaim with my laptop, and had permissino to scan the network to see what I could find. It was a simple challenge from my teacher who had a Honeypot set up and I happened to find a Printer which had FTP open for some reason.... OK odd, and after talking to Horse he said I could try a few things on it and could probably get in.

He was right and I got in without a problem, and started messing around. When break time came I told my teacher as the thing started spewing out firewall logs as I got in.

So we messed around a bit and actually got it to print which was good because in the Linux + class there was a problem with printing and this worked. So I had some fun... And found a solution to a problem and was thanked by the admins.

The point here is I had permission, regaurdless of the guy being an idiot, he has intent. If you give a baby a gun and it shoots someone do you think the law is going to NOT arrest you? No.

A baby doesn't know how to use a gun but it doesn't mean they can't pull the trigger. Same thing here, he may not know what he's doing but he's trying. I personally don't want to hear on the news "Evil Computer Hackers wreak havoc on school network" again.

this douche losing his internet because he violated the AUP isn't my problem. The school has a right to know just as people who live on the Planet have a right to know when someone is attempting to harm them.

The only reason it is against the AUP is because of the dumb clause that says "If we find any other reason that you might piss us off we will indeed kick you off for it. We will however not notify you of it. But, hold the right to punish you for it even if you did it before we made the policy"

And as far as your scenario... A child wouldn't be punished. How many times have you read the news of a kid hurting someone and getting away with it because "They didn't know what they were doing"

There is also a very big difference between potentionally hurting people and a network. I can potentionally hurt a person by making fun of them. I can potentionally hurt a network by talking about it.

I don't know why I am really talking about this anyway. There is no way in hell the school is going to figure out who the actual guy is unless one. He is the only person that comes here or two he is stupid enough to use his own computer.

I know a child wouldn't be punished. The Parents are another story.The idea was he's planning an attack and trying to get someone to do it for him. Charles Manson did the same thing. He's still sitting in prison. And we aren't talking about "talking" about it, he tried to pay someone to be a "hit man". If you cheat on a test and you get caught they give you an E, if you hire someone to break into something, you get a cell.

Wrong. Learn how basic networking is done. The router will log the inside NAT addresses tied to the outbound connections. How do you think people like us find people like you? Luck? It is very obvious you've never seen firewall or router logs or you just don't understand them.

house929 this person may be an idiot,but technically they have already committed an offence under uk law by sollicitting for someone to attack the server.One more step and they are involved in conspiracy which is a crime under the uk computer misuse act.

What strikes me as odd is that this character seems to believe that examination papers are stored in plain text on a server that is accessible by anybody over the internet.

I cannot at this point see any logical reason why this should be the case?

I am sure that the good folks at Manchester Uni. are well aware of VPNs, secure networks and the like. Also they must have dozens of servers?

Im ny opinion this is no differtn the soliciting someone to kill your husband or wife. you see on TV when the police set up a sting to capture people who are soliciting services to kill someone for personal gang..is this any different?

If there wasent criminal intent then the person would not have come here to solicite illegal activities.
